Glucosamine + Cod Liver oil - effective for joint 'protection' ?

I've started running again recently (first time since about 2004!) and i've noticed some knee pain returning (i think it was initially caused by squatting).

Anyway, i have just bought some Cod Liver Oil + Glucosamine pills (http://www.superliving.co.uk/pharmac...-capsules.html) and was wondering how effective they actually are?

Has anyone tried similar and noticed any discernible improvements?!

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the glucosamine and cod liver oil, but maybe you should cut back on the running a bit. Maybe you are trying to get into it too fast after a long break.

Providing Omega3s 165mg
Glucosamine sulphate 100mg / capsule.

Product is disgracefully underdosed for its claims.
Without exaggeration you would need to take 20 capsules a day.

Get glucosamine sulphate 1500-2000mg/day
Then buy seven seas active 55 providing 2300mg EPa/DHA

This will do what you are after

I have a similar situation as you except I am twice your age.

I am currently taking a glucosamine/chondrointin supplement as an experiment. In addition I have taken an Omega-3 supplement for some time. Thus far I find the most helpful to be Alleve (an over-the-counter product).

Reducing my running has helped me but that is bittersweet because I like to run.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for the input guys (and gals!)

LiftGirl: Possibly true, although im not experiencing any major pain right now, just some early 'twitches', so i'm trying to nip the problem in the bud, so to speak!

Maxgain: So do you think i'd be better off finding a 'pure' source of glucosamine (does it come in powder/liquid form, or something!?) and try taking that, as opposed to these pills?

pierini: Heh, i don't want to cut back on the running either! I'll let you know how i get on with the pills, if i try a more 'concentrated/pure' source of glucosamine, i'll try that too and let you know how it compares!

EDIT: Just read this, quite interesting: http://www.aromacaring.co.uk/glucosamine_fact_sheet.htm

I'm tempted to go for something like this: http://www.cnpprofessional.co.uk/pro...3bdde765597f2a which is 1500mg per serving... although it's kinda expensive... works out at about $40 per month!

I've found some other options (http://www.sncdirect.com/search/q=glucosamine) but they seem to be around ~500mg per serving :S

Do you think it would be worth the money, going for the Pro-Tect stuff?

No he means chondroitin , retains water in cartilage.

Chromium helps regulate blood sugar levels

oh... Dyslexia dude... I coulda swore everytime I see those Natures Market pills or whatever brand it is, it was glucosamine/chromium... the chromium was prolly next to the glu/chondro. supplement and I misread it.

On another note, weve been distributing Dog biscuits with glucosamine in it... would that be for dogs with bad hip displasia and such? Could I get an effective supplementation from these biscuits?

The only thing those dog biscuits may do for you Westy is make you want to raise your leg and take a leak every time you walk past a fire hydrant.

So what does the cod liver oil do? Will you be seized be an insatiable desire to live in water?

Harsh :P

Anyway, back on topic

I think i might go for these: http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pag...il.asp?pid=157

Is it worth going for a 'pure' glucosamine supplement like that, as opposed to one with other stuff in (cod liver oil etc?).

Ohh and also... i accidentally bit down on one of those tablets... SO DISGUSTING!!!!!!! I might as well have chewed on some rotten fish guts

I remember as a child my Mom got into this thing where she wanted us kids to take cod liver oil. It was an evening battle ritual as she administered the cod liver oil punishment as we stood in front of the refrigerator where it was kept. I can still visualize what the bottle looked like and the terrible taste, thinking to myself I'll never make my children go through this torture.

Enjoy your cod liver oil.
