Glutamine

Hi all,

I have purchased the Micronized Glutamine from AST. It states that consume once 30 mins prior to and after training. It didn't say whether I can consume them on non workout days or if I can consume it more than 2 times on workout days. My question is, can Glutamine be taken at larger amounts which is more than the recommended amount and when is the best time to take them then. What side-effects does Glutamine cause?

Glutamine is highly anti-catabolic. This means that it prevents muscle from being broken down and converted into energy. This is very important during times of stress when muscle breakdown increases. Every time your body is subjected to stress, whether it’s due to hard training, stress at work, or illness, your body releases cortisol. Cortisol is a powerful hormone that breaks down your muscle tissue. During hard training sessions, your glutamine stores can fall by as much as 50%. Glutamine has proven so effective at preventing muscle breakdown, it is used in hospitals throughout Europe to treat patients with severe muscle wastage.

I was told to take creatine before a workout and not to take Glutamine at the same time as creatine becuase they both could not be absorbed... Right now I only take creatine but thinking I will add glutamine.

there is nothing to prove that creatine and glutamine cannot be taken at the same time. also there isnt much evidence to show that oral powered glutamine has much of a effect on muscle performance in healthy individuals. ppl are getting confused and mislead from studies done where glutamine is given through an IV.

the majority of powered glutamine taken orally gets abosrbed in the gut and very little ever makes it to the muscles. that said, its proven for digestive health and for the immune system.

Acnes?

I also notice that not too long after I first took my glutamine and creatine, I started to grow acnes on my face. I'm 24 and couldn't be still in a very active puberty stage. So I was thinking that it might have to do with the glutamine. Any studies or articles on acnes and glutamine that's linked together or any smart dudes out there who can share a little?

it could be due to natural increase in testosterone - acne is a well-known result of high test levels, which is why teenagers get it.

While glutamine is important medically that is different as patients have a severe protein shortage and the a.a. usually nonessential is now essential I have seen no proof that extra supplementation is necessary for training

also layne norton has posted this

you know the glutamine you lose from the muscle during a workout that everyone freaks out about? all these companies talk about? That's not even stored glutamine! It's made as you workout by taking the ammonia group from BCAAs and through a series of transfers transfering the amine group to another donar to form glutamine. All glutamine is doing is acting as an ammonia carrier since free ammonia is toxic. All that glutamine you "lose" during training wouldn't have ever even existed if it wasn't for the fact you were training
