Glutamine

Todd told me about glutamine - how it helps with recovery, helps make sleep more restful, sounds pretty good. I finally broke down and got some, but now I have a question. I know, me and my silly a$$ questions. So here we go with another one.

The AST site said to take glutamine immediately post workout and after every meal. The bottle just says to take it immediately preworkout.

Which way actually works best?

The guys at my gym told me one teaspoon in the morning, and 2 teaspoons post workout is plenty. After every meal would be a waste. My guess is they want you to buy more ....

I was told the same thing, but the insteuctions on the tub differed. That's why I ask. I'd say since most do it post, AST says post, that would likely be best. I w/o in the morning so I don't know about a spoon that early or not.

I think Glutamine is the most depleted amino acid in the body when working out, so taking it immediately after a workout makes the most sense.

you're right - glutamine takes a serious hit from intense workouts.

Yah my understanding of Glutamine is it's one of the most important amino acids for the body and is the most depleted because of such a large demand by the body, so to stay out of a catabolic state especially when sleeping, glutamine is important to take.

Well, I wasn't completely sure so I took 1 teaspoon before and after the workout.

You're better off taking 2 teaspoons after, that's when your body is heavily depleted and needs it the most.

I still don't know. I'm going to do what firehawk said for now 2 tsp right after working out. This means twice a day for me. Or at least it did today.

If I manage to learn a better way, I'll share. What he said seems to make the most sense though.

post workout is the best time to take it. other than that, its up to you. take as much as you can (limited pretty much by how much you can afford). as the AST site says, after every meal if you can afford it, but glutamine is expensive i know most of us cannot afford to use it that much.

so id stick to
5-10g Post Workout
5g in the meal farthest away from workout (breakfast)?
and then add to other meals as you see fit

I think 10-15 grams a day is fine. Id' agree to take it post workout, 2 scoops ( 10 grams) and 5 grams in the morning should be plenty.

Bill Phillips, author of the book i been reading, agrees to take 10-15g a day, but to take it in 2-3g doses 5-6 times a day. That's fine i suppose, if you have a 2-3g measurement tool and remember to take it every 3 hours.
