Good Protein shake

Hello,

I have just started working out again. I am looking for a protein shake for post workout and some days as a meal.

I currently have some Myoplex protein shakes.

Are they good enough or are their other out there that are recommended.?

Goal is to loose weight and gain some overall muscle and fitness.

for pwo shake i would do what abcbodybuilding prescribes in this article POSTWORKOUTSHAKE , pretty much their blend for post workout nutrtion is whey, dextrose, and maltodextrin. For a meal replacement what i do is take an average coffee bean grinder that you can purchase from your a store like walmart for about $20 and grind up a cup or two of oats till its some what powdery, then take about two scoops of whey throw it in my shaker add the oats and some water and theres a cheap meal replacement that isnt all full of sugars like many on the market. you could even grind up some almonds or flax seeds to add some EFAs to your shake. i guess what im trying to say is i would never personally buy a pre made MRP unless i was at the mall and knew i wouldnt be home for a long time.

WOW - That article got my head in a spin.

What exactly do I make a shake with?

What brands or form can I get dextrose and maltodextrin

I like the premade shaked at times when I am on the run and need a quick shake.

well for the two sugars the dextrose and maltodextrin what i do is order the malto from 1fast400 and the dex from either supplementdirect or this website called butcherandpacker. yeah i know the article is a bit much i kinda get lost too heres the snippet that tells you how to do it exactly and it is based upon a 200lb male but what they forgot to mention is this is based on Lean body mass so they are assuming the man has 200lbs of lean body mass. they i guess are in the works of fixing that error.

"Phase one:

Immediately.

Mix (using the same 200 lb. male on a bulk example) 100 grams of a combination of 50% of your carbs coming from Dextrose and 50 % of your carbs coming from Maltodextrin with,

50 grams of hydrolyzed whey protein,

all mixed with 1 Liter of Water.

Shake all the ingredients well. (I personally like using a Tupperware cup for my shakes)

Scoop out and consume 5-10 grams of creatine, and consume along side the shake. I don’t recommend mixing the creatine directly into the shake. Simply spoon it into your mouth and drink it down with your shake. Consume 1/2 of the shake in this immediately following your workout in this manner. After you have taken half the shake in, continue taking small sips of the shake.

Phase two:

15-20 minutes later

Scoop out and consume (again don’t mix directly into the shake) 5-10 grams of L-Glutamine.

Now is the time to consume any anti oxidants with your shake. A high quality multi-vitamin will work well, or you can just take Vitamin C and/or E.

This combination of L-Glutamine and anti-oxidants will help to super charge your immune system after the beating it has just taken.

Continue sipping on your post-workout meal for the duration of the initial 45-60 minute period.

30 minutes after you have completely finished your post-workout meal eat a well balanced meal."

what i do is put about five pwo shake mixtures into seperate baggies on sunday so that i have them all premade for the week. i do the same with my MRP shakes also i premake them. just to let you know the abcbodybuilding shake i would only take after you work out.

MrRob you are trying to do some serious cutting right? Then I would stick with the protein powder and banana shake. IMO - Until you fully understand intensity and workout strategies, I don't think the shakes they are discussing here will benefit you much.

For my PWO I simple use some whey mixed with grape juice. Other than PWO, I'll just mix it with water or add it to a food. Period.

If you use other supplements, you can add them to the drink if you like (Glutamine, Flax Seed, Vitamin C) Adding fruits is a great way to add/change the flavor.

Put in enough nutrients and you can make it a replacement meal but a good diet should contain proteins from various sources (fish, chicken, eggs, etc). Also, keep track of what/how many calories you put in 'cause these can be a great way to "gain" weight.

Scrap the concentrated dextrose consumption Mr. Rob. It's definitely NOT for you. It will NOT help YOU. What you eat that's best for your progress will depend on who you are and where you currently stand on that ladder of success. Doing what the 6% body fat guys do can seriously backfire on you. In your case, you should minimize your carbohydrate intake -- and certainly stay away from energy-dense (lots of calories in a small volume), nutrient-poor foods (like simple sugars).

cursor i agree with you on that. those shakes are not for everyone i was just throwing out a suggestion. the only thing i feel really pasionate about are the homemade mrp shakes of just whey and oats. probably the cheapest ones to make and some of the best carbohydrates and good quality protein. i went from buying individual mrps to just making my own and i will never go back to buying that stuff again.

MrRob, I fully agree with Lady C. You will find on this website that there are some people who take these pwo shakes very very seriously (nothing wrong with that) and others who don't. Being that you are a beginner (from one beginner to another), don't get all caught up in the pwo shake as I did. There is much much information out there for us to learn, but we just can't comprehend everything at once. I lost 55 pounds in 5 months earlier this year without really knowing the things I know now. Just use some common sense eating (keeping a daily caloric deficit) and exercise your butt off. My personal exercise plan consisted (and still does) of one hour of lifting and up to one hour of cardio in the form of running. But at the beginning, I was running for about 20 minutes, so I have worked my way up.
As far as the pwo shake, just keep it simple. I do drink one now immediately after my lifting. I just mix:

1/2 cup fat-free yogurt
1/2 cup soy milk
1 scoop whey protein
Frozen berries

Makes a really delicious protein shake. So I do my lifting, drink my shake, go take a shower, then come back down and have something to eat. Experiment with your shake to make it taste enjoyable. Sometimes I use natural peanut butter in mine instead of berries. It's just a matter of personal taste.
So my suggestion to you my friend, is really to just concentrate on healthy eating habits (learning the right foods to eat, when to eat them, and how much to eat). And make sure you drink plenty of water. Have your protein shake after lifting if you choose, but when I lost all of my weight, I was not drinking any protein shakes. Get yourself into the new lifestyle of eating properly and exercising before worrying about all of this other technical stuff because all of this information overload can cause you to get discouraged and that is the last thing we want for you. Being a beginner, just keep it simple for now and get used to eating right and exercising. It will pay dividends.

Sooner Ed- Your statement is profound. I've been lifting for 22 years now, and I've lived by your statement for much of that time. (I got caught up in the whole "get technical about it" stage in my early 20's, though ).

This statement works whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced. If more people did this, they would not only get great results, but be able to live a life that's balanced and still make those workouts happen every week.

Competing BB'ers must be a little more fine tuned, though.
