Do a search for homebrew's most creams are not cream but a prohormone in DMSO, it allows for the same effect as injection but without the needles. (and well the efficency)
The reasons they do this are the same as injections, mainly to help the formulation chemist as they do not have to worry about the route of injestion screwing up the folding or the functionality on the compound.
So moral of the story is they do work but not as well as a injection which they are trying to mimic. Plus DMSO is a controlled substance in medical uses as far as I know. But it was used in a medical technique for joint inflamation in the late 80's. .
