Hmb
Before I buy this quite expensive supplement, I'd like to have your opinion on HMB (beta hydroxy beta methylbutyrate). Does it help gain muscle/lose fat and does it have any side effects, like sleeplessness (i once bought a fat-burner, nightmare... if I can say so, since I couln't sleep !)
Thanks in advance !

There have been various studies to show that HMB actually supports and increases protein synthesis, It can also improve strength, lean body mass, endurance and even muscle sorness. So all in all the branch chain amino acid - B-hydroxy B-methylbutyrate monohydrate (HMB) is good at preventing muscle tissue breakdown, and is especially effective for low-carb diets. Good Stuff.

That GNC is rubbing off on you, Lee.
HMB doesn't work for crap. There have been no in-vivo human studies that show it does anything.
If you want to spend more money, but some VP2 from AST. It's just protein, but they've done a double blind study showing it works better than "regular" protein.

Thanks guys, seems like it's something serious and safe. It seems there is no reason it would prevent from sleeping (my greatest worry about supplements, since I tried a fat-burner !). Sleeping well is so important !
I gonna place an order to Santa !

If you're not spending/wasting your money on other things then why not? If you're eating the protein bars all the time(I'd consider that not worth it) instead of a protein drink or maybe even one with HMB or HMB and a protein drink separately(these are just examples........one could come up with tons)....well I'll just say everybody has their own opinions eh? That's my .02
BTW....one can find people for and against HMB all over. Some swear by it....others dismiss it. Might depend on your particular situation........

I think the people who are most critical of HMB were looking at it to be something to aid in gaining muscle mass. The fact that many HMB products are combined with creatine (such as Betagen) only serves to add confusion.
The other problem is the dosage required is quite high. Some HMB products only give you around 250 mg of HMB, meanwhile the effective amount shown in the human trials was AT LEAST 3 g per day. If you only took 1/12 of the amount you were suposed to of ANYTHING, I doubt you'd see much results. Problem is, 3 g a day of HMB is insanely expensive.
From both the literature that I've read, and my own experience, the main function of HMB is to minimize the amount of muscle that you lose when on a cutting cycle. The only reason to take it, IMO is if you are training very intensely with both weights and cardio (on the verge of overtraining) while also keeping to a very strict diet. The stuff is so expensive, I wouldn't use it in any other circumstances.

Wait a second.......I thought there were no studies....
That Juven product is quite expensive as well....but it's main use is for those with Aids etc.....not quite the type of people training intensely. HMB on it's own isn't cheap either......I agree. But look what else people spend their money on.......

Well, so many of my friends spend a fortune on cigarettes, spliffs or/and booze ! HMB is not that expensive by comparison (£24 for one month) ! I prefer to spend £24 to improve my body rather than to spoil it ! Does anyone disagree ?

HMB is overpriced. if u have money to burn, go ahead it'll help, but you can get same results w/ just good ole glutamine and some BCAA's

Well, I've been supplementing with HMB for 3 weeks, 2 grams a day (woman), and can't see any results. I change anything in my workout, added a little more proteins in my diet, but still no change to report ! Would you mates carry on ?
