is soy protein any good?
I just bought GNC pro performance protein 95 and it has 25 grams of isolated soy protein. I was wondering if it was worth buying or should i have stuck with a regular weight protein?
Also i was checking the label and it says no cholesterol while all the other brands had cholesterol. Its tough to find a protein powder with no cholesterol..last thing i need is to get a high cholesterol while building muscle!

Cholesterol is found only in animal products. That's why you see it with whey but not with soy.

Except that it's a taste not everyone likes so if you've never tried it I would try a small package first before jumping into anything. Personally, I find it wretched and can't stomach it.

Some links:

http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2000/300_soy.html
Personally, i think in moderation it is ok. However the Biological Value of Soy is 72 whereas whey is 100 (or higher depending on if the chart considers egg whites 100 or 93). Plus soy protein has a lower PCDAAS (protein-digestibility amino acid score).
I would personally go for whey over soy =)

Whey has a better bio value, but soy is close. Close enough that I don't think it matters all that much.

What was the verdict on Genistein (and other soy isoflavones) and the Estrogen receptor agonism?
I hear a lot of conflicting info, but the balance seems to be tipping towards males avoiding soy.

Soy built bodybuilders of the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I wouldn't worry about using it. The conflicting info isn't coming from medical fields, it is coming from marketers.

Sure, whey concentrate boasts a BV of 100 ... but why not use whey isolate instead. It can offer a BV value as high as 150+. Variety is good—both for your health and for the flavors interpreted by your tongue. Blending the following "inferior" proteins in your diet add interest and change to your nutrition plan. Note that the BV value of soy, while lower than whey, is still up there with several other quality protein sources:
83 – fish
80 – beef
79 – chicken
77 – casein
74 – soy
I have them all (and many more ) ... in moderation.

You mean you haven't grown any man boobs from it yet, Steve? Bummer. Figured that all that extra phyto-estrogen would have castrated you by now and given you a nice rack to strut on the beach with! j/k I find the GNC brand of soy here in the states to be very palatable.

While some tests have hinted that concentrating on soy as the very primary source of dietary protein can be less than optimal for males, [as I recall] the test levels were so high that the conclusions drawn were meaningless [to me]. I'd like to see any credible and conclusive research that might convince me that periodic soy consumption generates anything but positive results.
