Keto-7, CLA and. . .

I have scoured this board and one other about nutritional supplements. I'm trying to figure out what to buy.

I'm going to start taking a multi-vitamin and a mineral (including calcium) supplement. But, what do you think is good for a stressed out, middle aged woman who is trying to lose 20 pounds and replace fat with lean tissue?

I know that the most important thing is working out. I'm lifing regularly and am going to reintegrate high intensity aerobics into my routing. BUT I've been under so much stress that despite my working out I've gained MAJOR stress weight.

I know that stress raises cortisol, corisol is bad news, and DHEA is supposed to help. But DHEA can convert to estrogen, however Keto-7 is supposed to have al the benefits of DHEA without the drawbacks.

What do you think of Keto-7. Is there a particular brand that you think is better?

Are there any other supplements you would reccomend? I CAN NOT take anything that has caffiene or other severe stimulants.

Does 7 keto make you hyper? I'm already hyper and I don't need anything making it any worse.

No, it shouldn't make you hyper. It is not a stimulant like ephedra was.

7-Keto-DHEA

Description:
7-Keto (3-Acetyl-7-Oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone) is a naturally occurring metabolite of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone). In the body, 7-Keto is not converted into testosterone or estrogen to any appreciable degree. 7-Keto, as a downstream metabolite of DHEA, is produced in the body during the degradation of DHEA. 7 Keto can be measured in the blood as a ketosteroid.

Claims:

Improves immune system function
Aids in weight reduction / Thermogenic
Supports thyroid function
Non-androgenic or estrogenic
Enhances memory

Theory:
Because 7-Keto is a downstream metabolite of DHEA it is promoted as being a “non-androgenic” or “estrogenic” version of DHEA. It is also promoted as a weight loss aid for its supposed thermogenic effect. Animal studies demonstrate that it can enhance thermogenesis, which may translate into weight loss. Because DHEA levels decline as we age and ketosteroids are made from DHEA, all conditions which may benefit from DHEA supplementation, may also benefit from 7-Keto.

Scientific Support:
7-Keto supplements, at a dose of 200mg/day in adults ~25 to 55 years of age has been shown in one poorly designed trial to enhance weight loss, aid in the reduction of body fat and effect thyroid hormone levels. This two-month study also demonstrated that 7-Keto does not significantly effect blood sugar, testosterone, estradiol, liver or kidney function, but the “significant” weight loss benefits were more do to an unbalanced study designthan to any real benefit of the supplement (the group receiving the supplement were significantly heavier/fatter at the start of the study compared to the control group). Another study showed that 200mg/day of 7-Keto for 8 weeks does not effect dihydrotestosterone (DHT), estradiol, cortisol and insulin levels in men 18-49 years of age. Several animal studies have demonstrated that 7-Keto, like other anabolic hormones, can induce thermogenic enzymes. One trial with 7-Keto demonstrated that it could bolster interleukin 2 production in lymphocytes, but this study was conducted in cells (in vitro) and not in humans. 7-Keto has also been shown in mice to improve memory (water maze procedure).

Safety:
7-Keto appears to be safe in doses of 200mg per day. The two human trials to date have not shown any androgenic or estrogenic effects of high dose supplementation. Many of the claims for 7-Keto are based on petri dish studies, animal research and cell line studies, thus the data and findings cannot be carried over to the human model.

Value:
The scientific evidence for using 7-Keto as either an anabolic agent or for promoting weight loss is quite weak and more research is needed to substantiate if any of the popular claims made for this supplement are indeed justified.

Dosage:
The few human trials have used a 200mg/day dose – but commercial supplements typically provide about 50mg/day.

This comment does it for me. I was actually reading about this yesterday and if it's just another weak supplement, the only weight loss you'll see is in your wallet/purse.

THanks for the info MAX. It seems like so many bodybuilding sites tout every supplement (not accusing DF of this) because they are trying to sell them. I guess I'll have to start reading ironman more.

No probs, Remember its always best to treat the cause not the symptoms if you are gaining weight due to stress its best to fix this.
I would thus look at the following supplements instead of weight loss ones all proven to help with stress.

CHAMOMILE
DOSE: Tension,
Tea: 1 to 4 cups daily or as needed (Newall et al, 1996; Weiner & Weiner, 1994; Bradley, 1992). To make a tea from fresh or dried flower heads, use 1/2 ounce of dried flowers or about 3 tablespoons, to 1 pint of hot water. Steep for 5 to 20 minutes (Newall et al, 1996; Weiner & Weiner, 1994; Bradley 1992).

Chamomile acts as an anxiolytic and calms conditions due to anxiety (Duke, 1997; Weiner & Weiner, 1994). It is likely that the sedative effects for which chamomile is popular are actually due to the glycosides luteolin and apigenin, which aid relaxation and to the anti-spasmodic effects of the flavonoid content of the plant (Brinker, 1995). Studies have shown that the inhalation of chamomile essential oil can improve mood; the species of chamomile was not specified; however, it was thought to be the Roman variety (Chamaemelun nobile) (Roberts & Williams, 1992).

LEMON BALM

Infusion: 1.5 to 4.5 grams (2 to 3 teaspoons) herb per cup of tea several times daily are taken orally (Anon, 1994). Hot, but not boiling, water should be used to prepare the infusion to avoid loss of volatile oils (Weiss, 1985). Steep the infusion in a covered container to further lessen loss of volatile constituents.
Tea: Place 1.5 to 2 grams of finely chopped leaf, add boiling water and allow to stand for 5 to 10 minutes, then pass through a strainer (Bisset, 1994).

double-blind study found that a lemon balm extract significantly reduced symptoms of anxiety, palpitations, and restlessness when compared to placebo (Buechner et al, 1974).

Another double-blind study found a combination of valerian root extract and lemon balm to be equally as effective as triazolam (Halcion). This extract contained 160 milligrams (mg) of valerian and 80 mg of lemon balm per tablet. A total of 20 male and female volunteers were randomized to take the valerian/lemon balm combination (2 tablets), triazolam, or placebo at bedtime for 9 consecutive nights (Dressing et al, 1992

KOREAN GINSENG

Dry root: 500 milligrams to 2 grams (ABDA-Datenbank, 1997; Schulz & Haensel, 1996; Ryu & Chien, 1995). Preparation of root: Put one half teaspoon of powdered root in a cup of water, bring to a boil, and simmer gently 10 minutes. Drink 3 cups a day (Hoffman, 1983).
Solid extract: 200 to 600 milligrams (Schulz & Haensel, 1996).
Tea: One cup of tea 1 to 3 times daily for 3 to 4 weeks (ABDA-Datenbank, 1997).

Studies done in the 1950s often showed that ginseng has the ability to improve mental abilities, stamina, and endurance (Brekhman, 1967).

Ginseng administration may have a normalizing effect on the body by increasing its natural resistance to physical, chemical, or biological stress without impairing physiological function. Ginseng is used to improve feelings of fatigue and weakness and to increase concentration and stamina, as well as during convalescence (Siegel, 1979).

VALERIAN

DOSE: For mild-to-moderate sleeping disorders, extract: 400 to 900 milligrams before retiring

a double-blind study, 48 volunteers were placed under an experimental "social stress" condition. Volunteers were randomly given a placebo, valerian, propranolol, or a combination. A low dose of valerian root (100 milligrams) demonstrated no apparent sedative effects, but subjective feelings on somatic arousal were reduced, supporting a hypothetical thymoleptic effect. Propranolol reduced both the physiological and psychic activation in the stress situation
Clinical trials have demonstrated that valerian extract is effective in the treatment of mild-to-moderate sleeping disorders and states of restlessness and tension

There are many more you can investigate hope this helps
