Multivits

I like to think I have a fairly good diet of fresh food. I do though take a multivit. Now, on the packaging they state that in some cases they will give me 100% of the RDA for that vitamin or mineral. It may well be though that I'm already getting that particular one through my food. What happens to the vits / mins that your body does not need? Its it sent out as waste? Also, can too much of a vitamin do harm? I think you can take in too much vit C for instance, though I'm not sure what is considered "too much".

Cheers,

It depends on the kind of vitamin or mineral. Vitamin C for instance is water soluable and excess is excreted in the urine. Others are fat soluable and are STORED in the fat. Excess can cause major health problems. Do some research on the specific ones to see which ones cause expensive pee and which ones can be bad.

Yes, that's exaclty what happens. Since they aren't stored like macro nutrients, they are 'expelled' from your system. Ever wonder why you have yellow wee wee a little while after taking a multi? There it all goes, down the tube. Alot of that has to do with bio-availability though. Some vitamins have up to 2000% percent of your RDA. This is due to the fact that your body is only going to absorb betwen 5-10% of that total. I wouldn't worry about getting 'too much' of any of them unless you are specifically adding alot of one or the other to your day e.g. too much iron for men is bad but, unless you are taking iron supps., you aren't od'ing.
