I took a medication that was being tested once. Nothing bad happened to me except the twitching, jerking, memory loss, and occasional psychotic breaks that happen with the memory loss. I can never remember where I left my rifle when I have one.
Just kidding you know.

and thus we have the development of MRSA and VRSA resulting in deaths of many

I happen to agree with maxgain. Antibiotic resistance is not a simple situation at all. We are quickly developing "superbug" bacteria that have become resistant to our antibiotics. Once all bacterial become resistant, we will no longer be able to use antibiotics as a tool for fighting infections. It will be just like the days when there were no antibiotics. When my grandma was young, she caught strep throat. Since there were no antibiotics then, the bacteria traveled to her heart and permanently damaged a valve. She was lucky though, she lived. Many people did not. Today it's very simple to treat strep with antibiotics, but someday it may not be.

You sound like you are also supporting taking antibiotics. Either way, it sounded like the original poster had a simple cold, and this has become something it is not lol. It's a simple issue, him taking penicillin one time will not make him be attacked by mutated/immune bacteria, etc. No need to make a mountain of a molehill is what I am saying.

I too am with Max, antibiotic resistance is a big problem. Of corse him taking pencillin one time wont make a difference, but imagine all the people did that. And then the next step is taking it twice,... and so on.
Also people, try to avoid antibacterial soap for regular use. Non-antibacterial soap works just fine.

I realize antibiotics are overused, but like you said arbit, this one time won't make a difference and that's what I'm talking about. I rarely take antibiotics...maybe once every couple years? That's why I do not see a problem taking these whenever prescribed, even if potentially unnecessary.
I too agree antibacterial soap/santizer is overused as exposure to bacteria helps build the immune system, where constant cleaning and sterilizing may actually make one more susceptible to sickness in the long run (so I've read...no studies or anything so don't ask lol...just hearsay as far as I know).

I certainly support taking them when needed. However, a cold is a virus. Antibiotics cannot do anything for a virus. Sometimes, if someone has a compromised immune system, they might be given an antibiotic to prevent a secondary infection. In a healthy person, though, it's a bad idea to give antibiotics to someone with a cold.
The mutated antibiotic resistant bacteria may not attack him, but they may attack someone else. Once mutated, they can spread like wildfire because they can't be controlled.

I'm not in complete disagreement with you, but bacterial infections (which penicillin would be effective against) can have similar symptoms as a viral cold infection. Since penicillin would probably do no harm but could help the individual, I don't feel the prescription was completely unnecessary. It's the doctor's job to help this individual first and foremost, not to worry about only potential consequences of others falling ill to mutated bacteria.

And three pages later. The answer is still "No".

I wonder if he even took it. He never did respond since the mild debate began.
