Doesn't sound like you're too sick. I'd either increase vitamins/megadose vitamin C and/or just get some DayQuil or NyQuil.

I don't think penicillin will break down muscle tissue, however, it is a very bad idea to take it unless it has been prescribed to you for a specific reason. In addition to killing "bad" bacteria that make you sick, they also kill "friendly" bacteria that keep your body healthy and help you digest food.
If you have a virus, antibiotics (like penicillin) won't do anything to help.

No.
Now some questions for you. Did your illness seem to have a "sudden onset" or did it happen gradually? Is your primary symptom the sore throat or do you have fever, chills, muscle aches too (if yes to these, did they start at the same time as everything else or later with a more gradual onset)? How many days have you felt sick?

Did you see a doc and they diagnosed strep? If so, then yes, you need to take the full 10 days of antibiotics they prescribe. Probably will be penicillin or it's cousin amoxicillin.
If it's just a sore throat and it passed - congrats you just had a short lived virus - most of them last a couple of weeks.

I second this. Its a really really bad idea to take antibiotics unless prescribed.

Well if you are sick and were prescribed meds, I don't see what the question is. It would be ignorant to sacrifice health and continue being sick just because certain medications may reduce muscle tissue/strength. You can't build muscle very well when you're sick.

Can penicillin break down muscle -NO
Can peniciilin heal a cold -NO
Have you a weak immune system or some other disease that a cold will make you susceptible to other infection or being diagnosed with a bacterial ionfection? - NO well then dont take the penicillin.
But my doctor prescribed it.- Yes because you went and paid for a consult and thus docs feel they have to give you something for your money and as there is nothing for a cold they give penicillin to ensure you dont get an infection and come back complaining.
Irresponsible prescribing leading to the growing ineffectiveness of antibiotics.

I wouldn't go so far as to saying this is a case of irresponsible prescribing unless you are a medical expert and examined him yourself. I wouldn't be too worried about a cold though, they come and go, such is life.

Unless he can relate to my above point which the doctor would of explained to him it is 110 % irresponsible prescribing happening all the time.

It may be, but I don't think there should be a serious debate whether or not to take penicillin. It most likely will not hurt you unless you are allergic, but may help you heal. I'd just take it as a safeguard anyway. It's not like they're prescribing medicine that is currently being tested or has serious side effects.
