Question

Protein from meat = protein from whey?


I've just started to supplement more with whey protein in powdered form. However, I was just wondering if the protein from these supplements is the same as those you will find in "actual" foods like meat. Does the body react to this protein in the same way as it would protein from meat? I guess my question is..... Is all protein created equal??

No, the whey protein in powdered form is different protein than in meats. There are different types of protein, which all have different absorption rates.

absorbtion rates do differ, but from what i can understand once the body breaks down the protein it's all the same.

It depends on the cut of meat, and on the type/quality of the protein supplement powder. It also depends on how fast you want the amino acids from the protein source to hit the bloodstream. Food prep time too is a potential concern.

okay i think that answers my question pretty well. I was aware that different kinds of protein are absorbed quicker than others but i was just wondering if once absorbed, it was all the same. From what I'm hearing it is...correct??

Oh, you mean the avatar. You go to user cp at the top and then to edit options. You upload a pic from your comp where it says avatar at the bottom.

Some people here need to do a little more reading. There have been 6 answers to this thread and not one of them has mentioned that whey is extracted from milk. Whey in itself is actually a byproduct of making cheese. Back in the days this byproduct was either thrown away or fed back to the animals. Then someone came up with the brilliant idea of using it to make protein powder. Different manufacturing processes (the first whey powders were processed using acid which left the protein in a fairly poor state with no natural peptide bonds intact) will affect protein quality and absorption rates just as much as the different "types" of protein.

not only do different proteins have different absorbtion rates, they also have a different amino makeup

Absorption rates is the only main difference between meat vs whey as they all contain the essential amino acids. I don't think the essential amino acid profile will be a problem unless your protein is exclusively from a plant source or casein.

For the most part I avoid whey since I think it is better to ingest a slow time released protein except for immediate post work out protein needs.

If you are cutting and avoiding carbs I have read whey can be easily converted to glucose via one of our biochemical pathways if over ingested.

I'm no expert but I would say no, body will react different to whey than to meat. It might not be just protein, but some other small ingredients which act synergistically. Eg, u get all these antioxidant pills containing vit E, A etc. Clinical trials have failed to show that they are beneficial. So then why are antioxidant rich *foods* good(and they hav shown to be)? Maybe becoz of some other unknown ingredients which form a potent mix with the vitamins.
I say mix up as many protiens as u can. Whey/soy/egg/casien.
