Protein Help...

I'm new to using protein, but ive been working out for few years without it and i finally want to give it a go so I can increase in size a bit more.

could someone here explain to me the basics behind how to use it etc or give me a website?

Ive seen protein buckets which are like 60g/100g serve of protein, and they come with like a 30g scoop which gives u like 17g of protein in the scoop. I'm just curious how much protein one should take per day, whats the maximum, etc.
I think i read once that you should have like 50g of protein per hour, so after a workout with a meal, would like one scoop of 17g per 30g scoop me enough on top of my meal? (most likely beefs, kangaroo meats, lamb, etc), or would it be better to take it twice, 60g scoop, over like 2-3hours, before my workout and after etc?

thanks

Rule of thumb is 1g of protein per pound of body weight. 1.5g if you are really busting your butt.

50g per hour?! That is whey (heh get it?) too much.

I've always taken a protein shake right after working out along with a good meal high in protein (normally two chicken breasts).

It really shouldn't be too hard to get 170g of protein. I normally get at least 150g and that is without trying (I get the other 20 or so through shakes).

kangaroo meat? WTF? who eats kangaroos? haha

anyway. Yea 30-50g every 2 hours is a good guideline...not every hour.

Aim to eat that much protein ever 2-2.5 hours...or 5-7 times a day. If you weigh 170 lbs, make sure you get at least 170g in per day. It sounds hard now, but once you realize what foods contain protein and which ones dont, you realize it really starts adding up. The hard part is adjusting to eating so frequently...but once you start doing it, it becomes second nature.

No No No......

1g of protein per lb of lean muscle mass

Take your total weight and body fat % and then minus

Example - 200lbs and 10% bodyfat = 180g protein

and dont forget that protein is there to supplement your already GOOD diet and is not a magic wand

Sophos is right. Base your protein intake only on lean body mass (not body fat): Bill & Bob

pssst ... good to see you back and active, Sophos!
