Protein on non-workout days?

First of all should I drink a protein shake before and after my workout or just after(when should I drink my two shakes a day)?

Also on non-workout days should I still drink 2 a day (33g of protein each)? And is 2 a day right for a workout day (I eat like 4 meals with a decent amount of protein in them)?

I think that you have to drink protein after your workout that is what is recommended. Protein feeds your muscle if you do it before you haven't yet ripped any muscle fibre. Just a thought.

There is no "2 a day" protein shake rule.

You need a post workout shake, and then whatever amount of protein you cant get through real food meals to meet your daily protein intake, you get from more shakes.

But in your case, 4 meals w/ a "decent amount of protein" + 2 shakes should be somewhat accurate.

I only take the shakes after I lift, rest of it comes from whole food. On off days I don't use shakes.

The important thing is to ensure you get enough quality protein everyday, whether it's a training day or not. So, if this means taking one or a few protein shakes during the day along with your normal food intake to meet your daily protein requirements, then so be it.

I agree with Todd, but will add a bit. It's important to get a good lean dose of protein every 4 hours or so. That protein can come from a shake or from food. If you don't, then when the body needs protein there won't be any circulating in the blood - so it cannibalizes protein from the muscles. The muscles are in a constant state of remodeling (tearing down and building up/anabolism and catabolism). You want to minimize the catabolism, so always try to have some protein in your bloodstream. I don't get fanatical about it, but if I wake up at night to pee, I'll usually stumble out to the refrigerator and down a shake before I go back to bed.

If your body is out of available aminos in the middle of the night, then you're simply not eating properly during the day (or you're simply fooling yourself into thinking that there is a problem).

Wait I have taken protein before working out just to try it out and I seem to be able to go for longer possibly because since IM getting more energy. So is it alright if I take it before I workout? Or... go back to taking it after I workout like I did before. The problem with that I think is that I usually work out at night for some reason I like working out at 10:30 pm.. then I eat the shake so when I go to bed at 11 im sleeping with 300 cals and like all these sugars in my body.. im not sure thats healthy. So im just questioning if I should take it before working out. Thanks.
