Protein Suggestions

Hi all.

I'm trying to find a new protein product to use.

Reason why: I suspect that I am reacting to my current protein supplement, Dymatize Elite Whey. On the Days i work out, i tend to not go to well in the toilet a little while (~an hours - 2 hours post) after i take my 2nd serve (i only take 2 serves per day). However on the days i don't work out, i'm generally fine (i take them about the same time as i do on workout days.) Now my issues in the toilet is not "that" bad, but i'm worried this could mean that i'm not digesting the protein properly

And i'm assuming i'll get a lot of suggestions to ON Whey, but i have tried them before, it was very apparent that i'm not compatible with it.

I'm in Australia, so American products don't come cheaply, however with the exchange rate at the moment, i might consider buying overseas.

EXTRA QUESTIONS:
Is quality of protein as simple as the content of different amino acids? or does quality of the protein still vary? Because if it still is the same, would it be a wise idea to buy a cheaper local variety with a good amount of each AA

Thanks

You could possibly change protein sources from Whey to say Soy and or Milk and egg based.

You would have to just check locally for availability as I know shipping to Down Under is really expensive.
Good luck

I too have trouble with some whey proteins mostly the concentrates - switch to an isolate (less lactose and fats). If you can't tolerate that then your only choice is soy, egg or none.

Take some pro-biotics and/or enzymes everyday to help with digestion and regularity.

Would whey be more beneficial though? From what i 'think' i know, whey is absorbed quicker than soy/milk/egg protein, unless its natural whey in foods. Wouldn't the quicker absorbtion of the whey be better for me if they are used as a pre and post workout supplementation?

Thanks for that suggestion, not sure i would like to invest in a new product, unless it is cheap? Do you have a link or just a name to a specific product that you are referring to, just so i can do some further research.

Thanks all

Correct. Alternatives are for those who can't do whey concentrates.

Yes, whey is absorbed more quickly. However, many on this board have had great success not using any kind of protein powder at all. Would you rather feel like crap or use a slightly slower abosorbing protein? I really can't imagine you'd see much difference in your results using whey vs. using egg or soy.

i tell this to everyone who takes powders and even if they've taken it for a long time, this still happens. Whenver you have a drastic change in your diet or quality of food in your diet you hit the ****ter alot. The reason being, the bacteria in your gut hasn't adjusted to the new food supply in order to break it down properly. Just like when you change your dog's food from one brand to another and he ****s ont eh carpet...it's the same deal. It takes about a week or two to get your stomach adjusted to it. The higher quality stuff the easier it is on you.. I switched from ON's gold standard whey to Atlarge Nutrition's Nitrean blended protien without any problems and am very happy with it. Don't like one brand or feel you get more from the other..switch to another kind.

Ok ok, Thanks everyone.

But, if i'm reacting in this way (needing to go to toilet a while after) does this mean i'm not digesting the protein properly or not making the most of it? Because to me, this is most important.

And does anyone have any ideas why I react to the protein this way, only on days i work out?

Thanks

We are not doctors but try this.

Go without your protein for a week or two. Then one day, post workout, drink your shake. If you need to visit the toilet soon after, there is a direct correlation to your body not liking it. If your body is ridding it of stuff it doesn't want - there is no time to absorb it fully. Stop using it or switch to some other kind.

Right, Protein supplementation is really for those who cannot get enough in from regular food. If you need it then by all means take it. However anything you can get from real, whole food is going to be much more effective for most of us.

Granted, there are some bodybuilders who reallyn actually do need far more than is convenient to get from real food and supplementation for them is a must. And for others getting low fat protein with big loads of carbs that will be absorbed quickly to get the food to the muscle in the 4 hour post workout window is vital. However, for most of us...just getting 4-8 small to medium feedings each day with a nutrient balance that works for our own body is very effective.

If you really feel you need to supplement with protein and can't get enough from food and are intolerant of whey, give casein some thought. It's absorbed more slowly and might not give you the problems whey gives. Egg and soy like LC already mentioned are also options. Personally I would choose egg over soy but that's an issue for another thread.

Good luck to you in finding the right way for you, but I do join the crowd in this one and suggest you give whole food some serious thought.
