What promotes/suppresses GH release?

What promotes and suppresses growth hormone release?

From my understanding:

- It is naturally released most during sleep (peaks a few hours into nightly sleep)
- Is stimulated by anaerobic exercise
- Can be promoted by certain amino acids and substances (ornithine, arginine, ....?)
- Is suppressed by high levels of insulin (?)
- Naturally declines with age

Is this right? What is everyone doing (or not doing) specifically with respect to GH?

You got it.

Read my response here

Swab & stick is your best bet if you are really interested. I would even recommend that unless you've grown your spare tire (30-35 yrs old). Exercise and diet will give you all the same benefits.

Hehe, I saw that message literally 5 seconds after I posted this thread... I'm only 23, so I'm not concerned with replacement therapy. I'm more interested in what supports the natural response -- from what you said though, there isn't one unless you have been fasting for 6+ hours (???)

Fudomyo & bsenka:

From the post and link provided (respectively), the congruence is that GH is not particularly anabolic. The conflict I see is that one is saying GH is released after fasting, and the other is saying GH is released after eating.

Anyone have any clarifying comments?

I'm certainly not saying that growth hormone is NOT released during sleep, it may well be. I've never seen any data that confirms it though.

As far as after eating goes, THAT is without question.

So would you personally go so far as to say you disbelieve that GH is suppressed in the presence of insulin? (Or could I be trying to make this too black and white?)

Ageing and local growth factors in muscle.

Harridge SD.

Department of Physiology, Royal Free & University College Medical School, Rowland Hill
Street, London, NW3 2PF, UK.

Muscle responds to mechanical overload by increasing its size. In contrast, as a muscle gets older it atrophies. The mechanisms regulating these differing responses are not fully understood.
Animal studies have shown that older muscles are less well able to repair following contraction-induced injury than young muscles. It is becoming clear that local growth factors produced within the muscle may play important roles in both repair, adaptation and ageing. The growth hormone/insulin like growth factor 1 (GH/IGF-I) axis is important during growth and development, but circulating levels of these hormones decline in later life. However, many tissues including muscle, produce IGF-I for autocrine and paracrine actions. Genetic manipulation of IGF-I in muscle has shown that it has considerable anabolic affects on muscle
both in young and old animals. Insulin like growth factor 1 exists in multiple isoforms and one isoform, which differs from the systemic or liver type (IGF-IEa), appears to be particularly
sensitive to mechanical signals and to muscle damage. This isoform (IGF-IEc) has been termed mechano growth factor (MGF). The anabolic actions of IGF-I and MGF are through stimulating
protein synthesis and by playing a role in the activation, proliferation and differentiation of satellite cells. These effects are discussed in relation to human studies of muscle adaptation to
strength training in older people who seem to retain an ability to increase muscle mass and strength through this type of exercise.

Geriatric Growth Hormone Interventions Not Ready For Clinical Use

Growth hormone therapy, with and without sex steroids, increases lean body mass and decreases fat mass in healthy older men and women.

Insulin is the most anabolic hormone. GH is not.

Sure, but you can't just go ahead and inject insulin they way you do with steroids. You really have to time it right...

I'll see if I can find the "how to" on the net somewhere.

I would say test is more anabolic than insulin (eaiser to use too). Tried insulin before and it will make you FAT!!! It is the combination of insulin and GH that is supposedly highly anabolic. Not only that, you need to be careful with it so you don't go into insulin shock.

I didn't mean to imply that anyone had to poke themselves. Just EAT!

lol Excellent point Fudo!

You know, it struck me as ironic that you, the guy who is committed to insulin control for weight loss, would speak out on the anabolism of that particular hormone. But you are absolutely correct in the fact that if you EAT RIGHT you will make the gains you are looking for.
