When to take l-glutamine?

I just bought some L-Glutamine powder. It says to take it 1-2 times daily, but the guy told me to take it every time I drink a protein shake (I drink one 30-60 mins before workout, right after workout, and one at dinner).

First of all, those are good times to drink protein shakes, right?
Secondly, when should I take the l-glutamine?

I think I read somewhere to take it right after the workout, and right before bed.

Suggestions?

Not to smart to drink a protein shake before you work out. Its just a waste of the shake. When you work out your bodies using carbs and buring off fats and some proteins.... the L-Glutamine is good for after a hard workout... it restores the glycogen in the muscle. Dont drink a protein shake before you workout... try to also eat alot of protein filled foods : Eggs, tuna, Turkey, Chicken, steak... dont get all your protein from powders.... Also L-glutamine is good to put in your protein shake after your workout. If your a hard gainer.. its good to drink a protein shake before you go to bed. That way here that protein sits in your body over night.. and while your muscles are resting... they can use the protein to rebuild and the L-glutamine to rebuild and replenish the muscle fibers!

Protein shake and oatmeal or a small amount of some other complex carb are perfect 60 - 90 minutes before you go to the gym. Take the glutamine as rookie suggested.

A bit long ,but something to chew on;

Glutamine is an amino acid that plays a vital role in boosting muscle growth, strengthening your immune system and speeding recovery from exercise. Glutamine helps your muscle cells to absorb more protein, leading to greater gains in muscle size and strength.

During periods of intense training, your can’t make enough glutamine to go round. Without an adequate supply of glutamine, muscle growth takes a back seat while your body simply recovers from your last workout. In fact, studies show that strength athletes (such as powerlifters) have lower glutamine levels than cyclists or runners . Regular high intensity exercise can lead to a huge 45% drop in glutamine levels in just 7 days . That’s why adding glutamine to your diet is so important. The bigger the "pool" of glutamine in your body, the faster your muscles grow.

Glutamine’s power is common knowledge to doctors and clinicians, who regularly use it to treat patients with illness, injury or infection. Just look at the range of research-proven benefits of glutamine.

Glutamine is anti-catabolic
Glutamine is highly anti-catabolic. This means that it prevents muscle from being broken down and converted into energy. This is very important during times of stress when muscle breakdown increases. Every time your body is subjected to stress, whether it’s due to hard training, stress at work, or illness, your body releases cortisol. Cortisol is a powerful hormone that breaks down your muscle tissue. During hard training sessions, your glutamine stores can fall by as much as 50%. Glutamine has proven so effective at preventing muscle breakdown, it is used in hospitals throughout Europe to treat patients with severe muscle wastage.

Glutamine has powerful anabolic effects
Not only is Glutamine anti-catabolic, it is also highly anabolic. Studies have shown that just two grams of glutamine 45 minutes after a light meal is enough to stimulate the release of growth hormone by nearly 400% in 89% of all men in the study . This makes glutamine a great nutrient to add to other hormone releasing substances to make one powerful anabolic formula.

Creatine-like effects
Creatine may not be the only supplement to promote rapid gains in lean muscle. Glutamine works in a similar way, by acting as a potent cell volumizer. Adding glutamine to your diet will increase the glutamine content of your muscle cells, causing them to swell in size. This serves as a powerful trigger for muscle growth – in addition, it also makes your muscles look a lot more pumped, fuller and hard!

Glutamine speeds recovery
Exercise robs your body of its energy fuel (glycogen). Just as driving your car burns petrol, the harder you train the more energy you burn. Research has shown that supplementing with glutamine helps to rapidly replace the glycogen you lose during training, increasing recovery, as high amounts of plasma glutamine is essential for optimum glycogen storage.

Glutamine strengthens your immune system and suppresses pain
Research shows that Glutamine is a powerful immune system booster. Training induced illness and overtraining can be a direct result of glutamine deficiency, leading to burn-out, illness, colds, flu and loss of muscle tissue. Supplementing with glutamine is a powerful and effective way to keep over training at bay or to recover from it, whilst staying as healthy and illness free as possible, especially during the high Cortisol months of winter, when your body is most at risk from getting ill. Research shows that high dosages are as effective as aspirin as a pain reliever. So next time you’ve got a headache or are feeling ill, whack down glutamine and not Aspirin, you could recover faster and trigger muscle growth at the same time!

Sorry went off on one then , How should you use it?
Glutamine is the perfect supplement to stack with any other you are taking. Glutamine can be added to any other supplement you are taking, whether it is Creatine, protein powders, or weight gainers to double - even triple - their effects. In fact, exciting new research from New York shows that a combination of whey protein and Glutamine has a powerful effect on muscle size and strength. Subjects using both whey protein and Glutamine built muscle size over three times faster than those using protein alone. So you can use with your creatine, protien, MRP etc. Last thing at night or on its own first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

What results should you expect?
After 2-3 days of using Glutamine, you'll notice an increase in muscle fullness, and feel an incredible pump in the gym. After 1-2 weeks, you'll see a dramatic increase in muscle growth, and notice far faster recovery between workouts. Used regularly for several months, and you'll be far less likely to suffer from illness.

Hope this helps.

Good answers, Natbod. Very informative. Just the kind of info I needed to justify the money I just spent on some L-Glutamine.

I think Glutamine brands and creatine brands are one in the same. Whatever's cheapest usually will do the trick and if your worried that the cheap stuff is just "junk" go middle of the road for price

cheers

GNC do an unflavoured which you can mix with anything.
But for the same price you can get Glutamax from maximuscle.com, the only downside in Glutamax is that it probably will need to be sent for mail order.
So the easy option would be GNC.( I get this one, friends an air hostess).he he

I Would Stick With The Powder, Mixed With Liquid It Will Reach The System More Quickly And Efficiently, And Lets Face It Thats What Its For, Capsules Take A Little Longer To Break Down(not By Too Much Though), And You Will Probably Find The Powders Are More Cost Efficient Than The Capsules.
