when to use glutamine?

Alright,

I've been reading that Glutamine is helpful is aiding recovery after strenuous muscular exertion. So the only time it would be useful is before and after a workout, correct?

I take mine after I workout or do cardio. Usually with a protein drink.

I've always been led to believe that glutamine and protien when taken together will fight for limited receptor uptake so once glutamine has been taken you should wait about 30 mins before taking protien.

Ummm, I think you may be talking about the hotly debated glutamine/creatine combination there. There was a research study showing that insulin response and glycogen stores were better when glutamine was used in combination with either wheat or whey protein compared to straight glutamine alone. So according to this study, adding a carb or protein to l-glutamine is beneficial.

Before and after workout are great times to add l-glutamine to the system. In the morning upon rising is a recommended time in some circles also.

no...... glutamine and protien both fight for the same receptor. this is from a bodybuilding coach as well as a dietitian who is also a bodybuilder, although I am sure there are reports and studies to prove and disprove almost any theory out there, I do trust the info I get from these particular guys as they both 'walk the walk'.

but it does get confusing when there are products that contain both glut and protien, ( I wouldnt touch them though ) I guess you've gotta just see what works for yourself.
personally I wouldnt take glut/protien together although I do take glut/carb/creatine together with good results.

just me 2 pence.

Take protein straight away, then wait 30 mins and have creatine + L-Glut

or

Creatine + L-Glut then 30 mins later take Protein

I think you'll find opinion divided on this subject. there was a discussion where the dietician favoured whey/water only for post workout but could not disprove the effectiveness of the carb/glut/creatine mix either. 'aint bodybuilding great!!!'
so from the BB coachs' point of view post workout is creatine/glut/dextrose followed 30 mins later with protien/water. I'm sure I'll get shot down for this but thats what he goes with and most of his clients win shows.

I used to follow the whey/water post workout but have now switched to the BB coachs' recommendations and I am finding it better.
I know guys here wont agree but that would be my advice...... take yer glut post workout with carbs+creatine and wait 30 mins then take protien/water.
