Yet another fish oil question
General recommendations say to take fish oil each day for heart health. Most recommendations say 2 to 3 grams. Where I'm confused: Is the recommendation for 2 to 3 grams of fish oil itself, or is the 2 to 3 gram recommendation regarding the Omega 3's contained in the fish oil?

I would say 2-3 grams of fish oil, but I'm just speculating.

I take an Omega-3 supplement of the following daily dosage:
1,050mg of EPA
150mg of DHA
150mg of other Omega 3 fatty acids
60mg of Omega 6 fatty acids
85mg of other fatty acids
The package indicates "provides 90% pure Omega-3 and 70% EPA (7:1 EPA/DHA) for maximum anti-inflammatory benefit."
Nice to see you posting Maxgain - where you been? Any professional comment you can provide me about the above dosage?
It seems like the anti-inflammatory benefit purported is real.

Hey Pierini,
Your supplement to me seems fine. I would prefer a bit more DHA but most studies are now showing outside the developing brain (pregancy, childhood) EPA is the more critical omega 3 to intake for neurological cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory functionings.
Also EPA can be converted to DHA if needed but viceversa is very difficult. I personally am taking a higher dose of my fishoils than you -1800mg EPA 1200 DHA- but if you are eating fish as well you will be fine.
The anti-inflammatory effect is real but I do not believe it is important due to a high EPA to DHA ratio more an effective overall omega 3 to omega 6 such as 2 or 3: 1 in your overall diet. It is good so that the omega 6 content in the supplement is low.
Also dont forget the benefits of omega 9s. Dont take supplements just down some olive oil daily.
I have been quiet for a while but still checking in every so often. I am at an important point in my career choice and it is taking a lot of adjusting.
I am also sorting out some health problems that led me to burnout. Im getting better but a stone loss of weight and equivalent strength over Christmas means that I need to work out some things and get back on track again. It is something I can only work out for myself.
I will be checking in and out but I figure it will be another month or so till I get myself back and can contribute a lot more.
Regards
Maxgain

Max - thanks much. That what I thought but wasn't sure. The caps I'm using have 216 mg EPA, 144 mg DHA, and 36 mg other for a total of 396 mg of Omega 3's. I figure 6 to 9 caps a day should be sufficient. Hope you start feeling better Max. It sucks when the bottom falls out.
pierini - If you don't mind me asking, are you using the anti-inflammatory for workout recovery purposes?

Not really.
I started taking them after reading a long-winded thread on another fitness website. One person's testimonial made me want to give Omega 3 a try. He did talk about the anti-inflammatory benefits but that wasn't a motive for me.
Generally I don't have a problem with my workouts beyond a little DOMS now and then. But as we speak right now I'm feeling a little, probably due to yesterday's workout. When I want real anti-inflammation relief, I pop a couple of Alleve. Try to keep that to a minimum though.
Maxgain, thanks again and my best wishes for your good faith, fitness, health and fortune in 2008. It will all turn out the way that God intends it. I look forward to your return here at DiscussFitness so you can grace all of us with your Maxgainisms.

Thanks guys.
Ill be back to regular posting sooner than ye willl know it.
Its not all bad the career issue is I have a few offers and just do not know what route to take. So not the worst posotion to be in.
Remember when it comes to ani-inflammatory actions inflammation is a key process in the repair and growth of the body -as long as we are talking about micro trauma and not proper injury.
With CV disease the biggest killer in the US the omega 3 benefits are most beneficial for most here.
Oh and guys until I return proper the avatar stays!
And Gooseneck and Andy I think there may be some repressed feelings that are making yo uncomfortable when you see it.

If you would like, you can check out this site http://howthehealthareyou.blogspot.c...il-lately.html It lists most of the common benefits that Omega 3's or fish oils provides to the body. Heart health is just one of the many benefits of Omega 3's.
