If you want to start a programme of zinc supplementation is good to know that are some levels to follow.

Starting dose should always be a minimum of 15-25 mg and increased slowly in the following manner:

First week: take one 15 mg (or 25 mg) dose per day (capsules or tablets). Second week: two 15 mg (or 25 mg).
Third week: one 50 mg dose per day.
Fourth week: two 50 mg doses per day.
Fifth and subsequent weeks: three 50 mg doses per day.

Zinc should be taken each day after food.

There are some various zinc preparations: Zinc sulphate is the most common (and cheapest) presentation but should be avoided due to the frequent occurrence of gastric irritation and dyspepsia. To avoid such a possibility, any zinc preparation should be taken after food.

The most efficiently absorbed is the chelated form. Pay atention, if you'll take a high doses of zinc then (50 mg/day or more) you must combine with a dose of copper: 2 - 4 mg per day.

As stated take with food and avoid sulphat and gluconate form. Doses over 30mgs a day will require copper. Typically doses can be up to 180mg a day but is there a reason youd want such high doses.
Greater than 100mg daily of zinc has been linked to prostate cancer recently

I take 50 mg in the picolinate form right before bed. Do i really need to be supplementing copper? This is the first time ive heard of this.

It inhibits/reduces copper absorption so typically doses over 30mgs for long periods could lead to deficiency

Do you take a multi-vitamin with zinc and copper in it ?? If so, I'd cut your zinc supp. down to 25mg a day. Anything over 40 mg is really too much and not necessary unless you have some real problem with absorbtion that a doctor could identify.

The effect of dietary zinc on intestinal copper absorption

PW Fischer, A Giroux and MR L'Abbe
Everted duodenal segments, tied into sacs, taken from animals fed different amounts of zinc were used to investigate the antagonistic effect of dietary zinc on copper absorption. The intestinal segments taken from animals fed low amounts of zinc transferred more copper from a nutrient medium across the mucosal cells than did intestines from rats fed high levels of zinc. The mucosal cells from animals fed low amounts of zinc retained less copper than the cells from animals fed high amounts of the element. This retained copper was bound to a protein fraction having a molecular weight similar to that of metallothionein. The data suggest that zinc exerts its antagonistic effect by inducing the synthesis of a copper-binding ligand, probably a thionein, in the mucosal cells which sequesters copper from the nutrient medium, making it unavailable for serosal transfer. This may be a possible mechanism by which dietary zinc decreases copper absorption and leads to a decreased copper status.
