Well, it would be better to jog at 10 for 1 hour :-)

And I hope those speeds are in kilometers per hour (10kph is about 6mph, 8kph is about 5mph for all us Yaquis).

When it comes to cardio, more is better for burning calories. More speed, more time, more time and speed. There is no magic "fat burning zone". The more effort you put into it (pushing yourself faster or longer or both), the more you'll get out of it.

I agree with Ed that you should consider running outside -- it's a lot harder than running on the treadmill. It's also a lot harder on your body (esp. knees, ankles, and feet). Try it once a week and see. Run on a track if you have one near you at a school or park, or run on the grass at a park or sports field, or on unpaved trails. Avoid running on concrete if you can, it's the hardest surface out there (running in the street on the asphalt is preferable if it's safe).

As far as diet, try to cut down on processed and manufactured foods, especially food with added sugar (or corn syrup), as much as you can. Try to eat fresh fruits and vegetables with every meal instead of something that's been manufactured like bread or pasta. Eating fat doesn't make you fat -- eating too many calories makes you fat. Manufactured foods are engineered to contain lots of calories because that makes them taste good :-) It also makes it very easy to eat too much without realizing it.
