although i'm a proponent of heat instead of ice...current medical practice and current medical recommendation is to ice instead. Heat might increase inflammation...Ice WILL reduce it and reduce pain.

That said, I'll still ice my patients with joint injuries and fractures...and give them a healthy dose of morphine or fentanyl... but for my own self...it's only heat after the first ten minutes.

Like V said heat will make the swelling swell more and ice will reduce swelling and pain, But i believe in using both, as in cold 1st to reduce swelling and pain then heat to make blood rush back to the area, and so forth, this makes the blood rush in and out like a tide but with every tide it brings healing qualities

This is actually the most effective method in my opinion. I don't use ice on myself because it gives me muscle spasms, but what you've described is what i've noticed over the years to be the most effective for most people. Even though icing is still the preferred method by most of the medical community...what you've described seems to be the best overall method for most people IMO.

That's what I was taught as well. Heat can make things "feel better," but sometimes it's at a cost of greater pain.

With ice, as the body reacts to the cold, and then the removal of the ice, you get that tide flow of oxygen rich healing blood. As I've learned it, ice will not hurt you, but heat "may" exacerbate, making ice the "go to" when there's any doubt.

I've been a proponent of ice all the time, but Andy has encouraged me to give heat a try,...I'm a reluctant and stubborn soul, but I'm open....

I still love my ice packs, and will swap out, ending in ice (that's my compromise!)
