Adrian's GNR training thread

On September 18th 2005 I shall be having my second crack at the BUPA Great North Run. I have done it once before, but was a big lad back then, and it took many hours - I shall be running on behalf of Shelter.

I have a series of treadmill speed and distance increase goals as follows (subject to dramatic change, which I shall be marking as passed or failed appropriately, with the target of finishing the 1/2 marathon distance (21.0975km) inside 90 minutes - the thread exists for me to keep a log of what I have managed, as well as to invite feedback on my approach/goals/etc etc.

Sunday 24th July - 10k @ 13.7 km/h = 43:48 minutes - PASSED
midweek - 10k @ 14.0 km/h = 42:52 minutes - PASSED
Sunday 31st July - 10k @ 14.3 km/h - PASSED
midweek - 10k @ 14.7 km/h
Sunday 7th August - 15 km/h
...and so on with distance increases at 15km/h - will get a better feel for this as the time approaches.

Note that this isnt all I'm doing - I am ordinarily in the gym 6 days out of 7 doing some form of running, rowing, or resistance work (though from now on the goals above will be all the heavy running I get involved in), and plan to take it outside around a month ahead of the run date. I shall be back later on today with info on whether I passed my 10k @ 14.3km/h target

well, I managed it - but have also succeeded in doing something rotten to my right foot, which makes me wonder if these trainers are perhaps not doing me any favours - shall be off to consult at a specialist sports footwear store before I step it up again

"overuse ligament damage" was apparently what was up with me - I got started running again (outside) on sunday and did 5 at 7 minutes/mile pace - pretty pleased with that after having not been able to take both feet off the ground at the same time for a month or so - I only have ~20 days till the 13 miler, but with a bit of luck should be able to see myself right for a 90 minute time - nothing like what I had hoped for, but you live and learn

Train smart for the next 15 days and taper for the last 5 days. Hopefully, the foot injury isn't causing you to modify your stride which could set you up for a new injury.
