Thanks Greg. I'm actually feeling much better today. I feel the way I did before lifting day before yesterday. I'm taking another day off so won't be lifting until day after tomorrow. I've got a little stinging sensation right in the SI joint on the left side. I think it started at work a few days back when I had to lift a 250+ pounder from the bathroom floor, out into a hallway, from an awkward position. When this happens, I never know how workouts are going to go, sometimes they'll make it jump right back into place, other times (like last time) things don't go as well.
Some more stretching today, a bit of heat, doing the cobra thingy, maybe some female attention while doing the cobra thingy, a walk sometime today to loosen up some more...some luck tomorrow at work to not have to lift anyone big from someplace weird, I should be squatting again in two days.
If this happens again, I'm doing what the doc said and getting the squat briefs. Probably getting a trap bar too. Trap bar deads instead of squats and real deads...not optimal, but better than being flat on my back.

Andy,
Good idea on doing trap bar deads. You will be surprised at how similar they are to real deads, if you want them to be.
I like them because it seems I have more control over which levers take the stress. With real deads it seems I have little control as it’s always primarily lower back.
With trap bar deads, although lower back always takes a fair share of the stress, I can transfer a good portion of the stress to my quads at a point where the lift is similar to squats

Leisurely 4 mile walk today. Took over 45 minutes to go around where I used to run by the lake. Feel pretty good, all loosened up now. Except my neck where I jammed the top of my head into the top of the door opening in the back of the ambulance...scoring a KO.

Yesterday was pretty good. Today is better. Ate like a powerlifter yesterday, not as much today. Still have a bit of a "sting" in my SI joints on both sides of the sacrum. Between this feeling, not enough time to eat on schedule because of people dying and others trying to (yeah, work still happens), I think it will be a good idea to put the workout off one more day. I'll lift tomorrow and Wednesday. Cardio on Monday. Off tuesday (working that day).

Woke this morning with a stinging sensation in my right hip with every step.
I'm going to listen to my body again and not lift today.

Thank you my friends.
Good news, I'm back in the gym as of today (kind of).
Took it easy, pushed as far as I dared, and used a belt (the one that fastens with velcro to give me something to push against and keep my "built in belt" activated. No ego lifting for me today. I decided to lower the weight a bit more for light squat day and implemented something I remember from reading a long time ago which I'd forgotten. Light day is supposed to be only sets of 4 reps, not 5...
Today's workout:
01-15-2006
Squat
45x5
65x3
85x2
135x4
145x4
155x4
165x4
Stepped under the bar with some fear and my right hip hurting before I did it, hip feels great now.
I stretched between every working set, even when I didn't feel that I needed it. I did the cobra stretch, the cat arching stretch, and some rotation stretching. I'm calling it stretching because yoga poses just sound so...not me.
Dead
135x5
145x3
155x2
165, 175, 185 x5
Felt some tightness starting where the erectors, the lattisimus dorsi, and the bottom of the trapezius are close together at so decided to stop for the day. A little workout doing the most important lifts is better than no workout or an injury. I'll simply keep repeating what I was supposed to do for this workout until I can get it with the weights I'm able and do the whole thing.

If you're following the Bill Starr program, the light day for squats is 4 sets of 5. You do your normal first 3 sets, and then the 4th set is the same weight as the 3rd set. Not sure if you're trying to follow it exactly though.

Thanks, I knew it was something different from what I'd been doing. You just saved me from digging the books out.
Either way, this was all I could manage today. Next time - I'll work harder.
Good news though. Now, hours later, I feel perfectly fine. Even the hard bleachers at my kid's basketball game didn't hurt my hip at all.

Good to hear Andy. The same thing happens to me from time to time. I've left the gym thinking I've injured myself big time, and in a few days I'm back to normal.
I will say though that my body has a tuff time adapting to the kind of volume you are doing ( at about the same weight that you've been at as of late ). Again, says a lot about how well you are dealing with the CNS.
And about the smoking thing ( I read something about it in another thread ), as Opra says " with success comes responsibility" In the world of people who deal with these kinds of diseases, I would think you to be the "poster boy" for _how_ a person should deal with this kind of thing.
I wouldn't think you'd want all those people staring at the poster concluding that smoking is OK would you?
Give some thought to quitting for them
Dan

Yeah, I know. But with my brainstem being fubar right now, it really doesn't matter. Perhaps it will get better. If it does, then I'll give it another go. Otherwise, I'm simply enjoying life all I can while I have it.
