Good Morning a_welch503,

Congratulations on your accomplishments.

I like the "ghandi on crack". I thought my "pit bull on speed" was funny but I think yours may win the laugh contest.

Have a good day!

Actually that one belongs to my daughters - they made it up. Oh, thanks to all of you for the kind words.

OK, a little late posting it - finally got all my cardio done for the day.

Cardio: 2 hours splitting firewood - 2 p/u truck loads. Then a 1/2 mile run and a 4 1/2 mile walk. The last mile, I had my 9 year old on my shoulders AGAIN.

Time off from going with me for school, basketball, girl scouts hasn't helped her fitness level much. She said she'll be glad when she has more time to go with me so that she can keep up again.

I've been trying running again for the last few days - my knees are starting to swell and pop again. I guess I'm just going to have to stick to fast walking for a bit longer. Tomorrow is leg day so it is ice and blue stuff tonight.

Take care of those knees man! Having a 9 year old on your shoulders doesn't help them either... lol Nice work though, whew! You're a cardio machine. :

Thanks lift - I'm not really a cardio machine, I just felt good today and thought I would take advantage of it. The only thing that really gets my knees is running. I think it is left over damage from being so fat for so many years, or perhaps it is from when I got them both broken when I was kicked by a horse when I was 16. Either way - running hurts them - maybe I can build up to it. One doc friend of mine says I can do it and that running is actually good for the knees over time. Of course he is one of those 10 mile every morning runners with a resting heart rate of 40.

I'm thinking of investing in a road bike instead - do my walking then bike for a few miles. I may see if I can borrow my wife's to see if I like it. She has a brand new mongoose mtn. bike that has been out in my storage shed for the last 7 years.

I believe you can run again if you want to, you just need to build up to it gradually and have the best pair of running shoes for you that money can buy.

I tore my ACL and after a long rehab I am running, and as well as I every have.

You can do it if you want to. The question is: do you want to?

Have a great day!

I think the answer is "I need to". I don't really believe that it is possible to get the same cardiovascular benefit from walking that one can get from running - even if on a 4 mile trip, I pass the runners just before the 2 mile point. I was never able to run after the horse incident. Then back in the spring/early summer of '04, I had built up to a little over a mile of running before my walk. I could actually walk faster than I could run, but I was running. Then out for a while with a back injury and never quite got built back up to it. I keep trying though. Well, it's leg day, kind of late in the afternoon, time to go squat.

If you go to a gym or have access to a Y, swimming seems like it'd be great for you. It's awesome cardio, works your whole body, and won't require as much from your legs like running would.

As I have said many times on several website forums "there's nothing like running to get the fitness job done." And I mean running, not jogging which is extra hard on the body due to the pounding.

Good luck with what you decide to do.

Legs

Squats.............160x3x6
SLDL...............160x3x6
Calf Raises.......250x3x12
Leg Extensions.....125x3x4
Leg Curl............60x3x4

Damn MS straight to hell - I am so tired of this - my legs are getting progressively weaker. 160 was the absolute maximum I could squat today. It wasn't that long ago that I was getting 250 and looking forward to working towards 300. What is next, curling more than I can squat?

This sucks. I started with 180 today, and ended up sitting on my butt - unable to get back up. Finally I had to drop the bar, one arm at a time and try to catch it behind me.

I still made them do all that they could possibly lift - even though it was such a small amount. So even though the weight was small and puny - the work done was at 100% effort - no slacking.

I added two new exercises to my leg day to make up for the weak squats - leg extensions and leg curls.

No cardio today, I had to take my wife to the doctor, then was tied up with taxes all day. Tonight I had to see a guy about a new pistol. I'm going to bed early tonight so I can get up early enough to do my arms before work tomorrow. At least then there will be a workout I can feel good about (if I don't oversleep).

Hey welch - keep your head up, man. You got nothing to be embarassed about. Not many people would do what you're doing, let alone do it with a chronic illness.

I have a chronic bladder disorder (nothing as potentially debilitating as MS, mind you) that sometimes gets so painful it keeps me from running for weeks at a time. All I can do is shrug it off and wait until I improve enough to get back to it. Like my mom always told me, "No one said life was fair."

Keep pushing that weight. Listen to your body. You'll be back at your previous level befoe you know it.

Thanks klinger - I don't give up - just accomodate when things don't work like I want them to.

Firehawk, no - I have an old vhs recorder somewhere in storage - I'm not sure where. We don't tape anymore and don't have a vhs player anyway. I'm waiting for the home DVD recorders to get better in price.
