Pierini,
Honestly I am not going to deal well with people who do not push themselves. I don't believe that not everyone is crossfit material, crossfit can work with everyone, I see it every saturday when we have athletes and an 80 year old man, all in the same class. The nice thing as you know is we can scale any workout and pretty much any movement. I definitely won't be just taking the WOD off the website, but I will be doing some sort of super-set/cardio/circuit style with most of my clients.
I'm sure you are right, do I sell out and not give them the best workout just to keep clients or do I state that either you 'go hard or go home' when you train with me. I still haven't decided. Luckily I don't plan on making this a full time career so I might be lucky enough to not have to rely on this as my main source of income.
Obviously I have little patience with those who want change but don't want to put in the effort, and I think I will be upfront about that in the inital meeting. You have to put in the time and stay ontop of your nutrition to see results. From what I am learning from the fitness director that is perfectly acceptable, and what he tells clients.
I also learned they are implimenting a new system where one girl will be managing all the new members. They will go thru an assessment and orientation then paired with the trainer based on their goals/fitness level. I am supposed to take the girl who is going to be incharge of this program through a workout so she knows my training style. The nice part about this is I will most likley get clients who will be a good fit. this is kind of how it worked with my old trainer, he usually got those who wanted to work and push themselves, and older ladies and those out of shape didn't end up with him. I've already told the fitness director I don't feel comfortable training obease or severly deconditioned clients quite yet. I wouldn't know if they are actually tired or if they are just saying so because they don't want to work hard. the gym owner thinks that the obease ladies will not want to train with me because they will think I can't relate to them or what they are going thru, which is true and quite fair. i can be compasionate to a point, and if they are willing to really make a life change I am more then happy to help.
My good friend who I got into working out (I used to train her for free) for a couple of years has lost over 50lbs, she has 35 more to go before she is at her goal weight. We worked well together because she listened to me, and ate what I told her and worked out when I told her to. She is now in LA working with a trainer and still dropping weight, I am so proud of her!
The Flash- you crack me up! I know I might get frusterated with those too, but I was there once. I didn't want to learn cleans or do deads but I am so happy my old trainer made me!

only had about 20 min at the gym today.

mix of CFWU and Burgener WUx2
snatch with light bar x10
squat clean: 45x10, 55x5
workout:
4 rounds for time of:
65# clean and jerk, 8 reps
400m run
time: 15:35
comments:
only had 20 min and needed to get a bit of cardio in and a little 4x8 so I cam up with this on my drive to the gym. Worked out nice, very tough and dripping with sweat. full squat clean on all reps. sales training after the workout.
food:
carbs: 185g 30%
protein: 204g 42%
fat: 61g 28%
total cals: 2051
last night only woke up once to eat. been counting my zone bar but eating it when I wake up in the middle of the night.
Pierini's comments lately about being in the pool brought back a lot of great memories. I was in the pool before I could walk and a little diver at age two. I just had to share a baby gymgirl photo. I think I was 2 in this picture and getting ready to dive.

I like that one. I need to do some sort of metcon tomorrow morning, and I have no ideas jumping out at me, so maybe I'll do that.

Hi gymgirl,
Like Tim, I like that WOD too.
You were cute, but not quite as chiseled as you are now. I'm looking forward to more pool sessions but it has got to be hot. We had an unusual off day yesterday and surprisingly a light sprinkle last night. If I wanted that, I'd move to Seattle!

lol, thanks. one of my friends told me awhile back that i looked like a baby meathead in training. haha.
pierini, no chisel at age 2...thank goodness i didn't know about 'cutting' at that age. oh and sounds like you got some of our weather in cali and we've gotten some of yours! it's been 95 here and this morning at 5am it was 73 degrees already. i ususally drive home with the AC on, but today i even had to drive to work at 6:30am with AC!
glad you and tim liked the workout, looks easier on paper.

Unfortunately you will lose a huge customer base just there.
I know people have to want to change but to come and pay you surely they are showing some intent.
Do you not feel part of your job is to drive them set a motivation make them want to even if it requires harsh scare tactics.
I know from my own job some people you just can help they show no interest in their health but just because they made the decision to get training/ take a tablet they expect magic to happen but for others?

maybe I am not understanding your question or maybe I didn't explain it clearly in my post, but i do feel it is part of my job to motivate them but what I am more specifically referring to is the clients who don't try then complain that they don't reach their goals.
I'm going ot have to be frank/harsh with those because they cannot expect to show up once per week then eat like crap and not workout on their own then hold me accountable for them not losing weight. That is my biggest fear right there. From my past experience as a trainer (10 years ago) I remember that was the biggest challenge, I'd motivate them write out programs even call to see how it was going but some people didn't want it bad enough. Obviously not all are like that. my goal is to help make working out and healthy eatiing part of their lifestyle, as I did with my friend.

Just don't chase them off if they don't make progress for a while. I give piano and guitar lessons on the side, and sometimes (like this last week, for instance), the kids just don't practice so they don't get anywhere and we end up basically re-doing a lesson. I just bug them about how they need to actually practice, and it usually does the trick. Don't be afraid to tell them how it really is: you actually DO have to eat right and you actually DO have to work out on your own. Your job as a trainer is being a teacher; you're not responsible for their weight loss, just teaching them how to accomplish it. It still comes down to personal responsibility. You should probably just be up front about that the very first time you work with someone - lay it on the line, and remind them as necessary.

Frick it is hot out. I believe we hit 100 degrees today, and of corse the AC was broken in our old ass building at work. I drank (3) 64oz nalgene bottles of water while at the office and 2 more since i have left along with a 32oz perrier and I am pissing like a race horse. It is 85 degreees in my apt right now. Pierini, JDR I don't know how you guys deal with this heat, must be better with AC! boyfriend is getting mad at me for walking around naked with all the windows open. haha it's too hot for clothes! Any truth to how I always hear it's a different heat up here then there in cali or arizona? Anyway gym had AC so I definitely went there!
cardio:
2.25 mile interval run on TM
400m warm-up 6.5
400m 7.8, 400m 6.5
400m 8.0, 400m 6.5
400m 8.2,400m 6.5
400m 8.2, 400m 6.5
workout:
Back Squat 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 reps
(no shoes)
warm-up: 45x10, 95x5
135-140-145-155-165- 170(PR)-160
comments:
squats went up pretty easy today until I got to 165. Struggled for that 170 rep, got stuck but was able to push through safely. back down to 160 after that.I always have my best squatting days shoe-less. I'm happy with the depth, not full on ATA, but definitely below parallel, and to the point right before back starts to curve. Ran out of time and had to do sales training or would have liked to do a little more.
food:

protein: 223g 45%
fat: 54g 25%

woke up twice last night to eat. lately i have been dreaming that i am starving and in my dream and i eat, so i keep sleeping. then i wake up in pain from hunger and realise I only ate in my dream. then i lean over and snack on 1/2 my zone bar and a huge swig of water. so werid.
tomorrow is my friends b-day. i can't believe on the hottest day of the year so far I baked brownies, and put more heat into our apt. Anyway, I am calling them e.z. coffee toffee brownies. I made them just for him. his initials are e.z. and he likes cofffee and toffee. Boyfriend came home and told me I better take those all out of the house! hooray, he dosen't want to be temped by them. I'll have them out by morning! :
Tim I appriciate your insight, thank you. I'm just going to have to be upfront. I also feel better because today we had sales training with a girl who has been a trainer there for a year because the fitness director is out of town. There were to other 'interns' there with me, and I found out the other two were not comfortable with the sales pitch either. Promising specific weightloss in x amount of weeks just didn't feel right. This girl assured us we don't have to take that route, she says she never promises x amount of pounds dropped in x weeks and she also isn't into the hard sell. She is the only full time trainer too, and never is stuggling to find clients. That's nice to hear beacause I am not the hard sell type person. That's not how I want to be treated and not how i want to treat others. I feel better that I won't have that added pressure of having promised them they would lose a specific amount of weight in a specific amount of time. If they aren't seeing results they want we can always reassess. She also said it is ok to train people who dont want to work. She mentioned some people hire her just to hang out, and that her clients are fully aware of it. I guess as long as they aren't expecting a miricle I would be ok with that. it will definitely make those clients I do get that want to work hard even more special.

That's a great squat. I put that at about 165% of your bodyweight...not too shabby!

Very funny gymgirl! Obviously you don't have the same "fat back" issues that you discussed way back if you are running around in the buff. When I used to live on 5 acres I had a spa off my back deck and I would like to come out of the spa butt naked when there was a full moon and howl like a wolf. Brought many a laughs when I had an audience. In the buff stories are funny.
Believe it or not, my 102 year old home does not have A/C, although I have an awesome whole house fan and a great evening river breeze, plus lots of trees and a great house position to minimize the blistering summer heat. There are only about 10 summer days that life can be a little rough and those are the days I head for the public pool. So I very well know the heat that you described in your post.
Go outside in the buff and howl at the moon like a little wolf next time it's hot. You might scare your BF.
