hey gymgirl - you are doing great! Good news on your back feeling better!
do u just do this workout in the regular gym? so u do your pullups and then get on the floor right by the pullup station and start doing pushups? I was thinking about trying it but there isnt a space near the pull up assist machine to start doing pushups right after.
Sounds like it would be a tough workout - i doubt id be able to get three rounds in, even with the assist!

oh and about the friends - i think if they are unsupportive it generally means they are jealous IMO. Mostly people I know think i am weird because of my healthy food choices - they say "dont u ever get sick of eating that?" what I want to say is "dont u ever get sick of being overweight and unhealthy?" lol of course I dont say that but it really does baffle me that people think i am missing out due to my healthy diet - i really feel like they are the ones that are missing out!

hey, minime! thanks i hope my back STAYS feeling better. i am so sick of the 1/2 ass workouts. yes i do this workout in the gym. sometimes during the week i go downstairs in a room people don't use, becuse if i do this in the crowded gym i am huffing and puffing and people look at you weird. haha. so yes i do the pull-ups then drop down right next to the pull-up area and do push-ups and body weight squats.
you should totaly try it, even if you have to move away a little bit form the pull-up machine to do your push-ups. it is such a great workout, and your arms will be pumped when you are done! i know we are similiar in the way we love to do cardio/run, and the nice thing about this workout is it is very aerobic, i usualy am more wiped out then after a long run. i hope you are able to give it a try, and you will get way more rounds in then you think you are capable of!
oh and p.s good call on the friends thing. those people are out of my life now, and the people i have around me just think i am weird too...haha, oh and your question back to people who ask if you get sick of eating healthy...let me tell you taht same response has almost come out of my mouth many many many times. ;-)
and thanks BRAT! oops i typed BART the first time.
tonight i work with my trainer again, and hopefully my back will be feeling good.

thanks midgetcop, i try ;-)
thursday, july 6
cardio:
20 min on eliptical at 8.3, 2.65miles
i worked with my trainer today, and he started me with a workout of:
As many rounds as possible (AMRAP) in 15 minutes of:
*agility course: running inbetween/around 5 punching bags, as the pushed them in all different directions
* 15 bosu lunges (he had 15 bosus lined up flat side down, and i had to do lunges all the way down the line on the bosus)
* 5 bosu push-ups (flat side up)
14 rounds in 15 minutes
then we did
As many rounds as possible (AMRAP) in 14 minutes of:
5 standing skull crushers
3 power pull-ups
5 incline bench press (60lbs)
20 modified pull-ups/body rows
5 rounds in 14 minutes. this one was super hard and i lost a lot of time on the power pull-ups and modified pull-ups/body rows. i was also totaly beat after the first part of the workout. my trainer had me try some burpees, to see how the felt on my back and it was a bit painful, so no burpees for a bit...yeah i'm really bummed about that. ;-)
food was pretty good today too.
carbs: 164g 38%
protein: 152g 43%
fat: 30g 19%
total calories: 1467

That's a really impressive "Cindy". Very nicely done. How about "Mary": As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of...
-5 handstand pushups
-10 1- legged squats
-15 pullups

thanks tim, and minime.
oh my i have see 'mary' on the crossfit site and have looked the other way. haha. no i really need to try 'mary', i don't know about those 15 pull-ups...YIKES. my trainer had me try one legged squats last week but for some reason they were hurting my back (it was after it was bothering me from thrusters, same day actually). I see my phyisical therapist today, and if my back feels better i will give 'mary' a try next week. just don't laugh when i get like 2 rounds in.

i hate my back right now. went to the physical therapist on friday and explained to her how my back started hurting from burpees. she worked on it for awhile and said my sacrum was tweeked slightly but she was able to pop or move it back into place. since everything was out of whack and my back is still healing from the bulging disc my muscles are knotting up. the good news is most of it now is muscular, the bad part is it's all due to my stupid disc. she said it would be painful since she worked on it and there is some "fluid' she released. i've heated and iced and then tried to hit the gym this morning. didn't get much done. started on the treadmill and barley hit 10 minutes light jog and i could feel the tightness/pinching on the right side of my lower back.i did the elipical for 20 min, with slight pain. i just ended up doing alll of her exercises, and skipped out on weights. right now i have knots in the middle of my back, and down in the piriformis, and my quads. grrrrr
i'm so frusterated. i always knew i loved to workout, but until my injury i didn't realise how much i love it, and how it centers me. i've been finding myself slightly depressed or bummed on days when my back is hurting and it messes with my workout. i can't put my finger on why i'm getting bummed out, but i think it's just frusteration. i'm definitely being careful and not pushing myself if i feel pain, but i just can't shake this feeling...i wish i could explain it better. i can't figure out if it's guilt, or if i feel like i'm a wuss, or if i actually do get a high from working out, and not getting in a good workout is making me upset. or maybe i'm just upset becuse i don't like limiting my workouts...i have no idea, all i know is i am sick of being injured....sorry i just had to vent.

I hear exactly where you're coming from. I injured my back years ago - fractured a disc and a vertabrae. But that was a long time ago, and luckily hasn't interfered with my workouts.
But last year I hurt my hand and wrist in a car accident. Stupid me, I never got it checked at a hospital or at my doctor's - I was too upset, frustrated at crashing my car and getting charged with careless driving. I was training for my police tests and the whole ordeal put my entire application process on hold, and I couldn't touch the gym for months. Even after I did return, my wrist pain came back and I had to alter some of my lifts to try and avoid the aggravation. Even now, over a year after the accident, certain lifts can irritate the wrist and it makes me feel like I have to take a step back and baby it. It's frustrating because I can't necessarily be this careful during my police testing or during my training at police college.
I think a lot of people are thrown into this same boat - we get injured and although the will and determination is there - it's not always wise for us to push ourselves if our body is telling us 'no'.
Look after yourself and go easy on the back. It looks like you already know when to back off, but don't let it get you down. It will get better.

Be patient.
Injuries give us opportunities to try new things. Active rest is powerful. How about some brisk walking as in 5+ miles a day. Can you do planks? Those always make my back feel good.

hey gymgirl - i hope your feeling better now. It is very frustrating when you can't work out as much as you like because of an injury.. the thing that annoys me the most is seeing everybody i know sitting around with their 'uninjured' bodies, and doing absolutely nothing with them! I say to my sister - can i borrow your knees for a few hours, since u arent using them anyway lol
I guess we should be happy we can still exercise even if not as much as we would like - my biggest fear in life is probably that something would happen to me that I could never work out again!
Well, anyway, hope you had a good weekend and fed your injured body some wine & good food :

thanks, midgetcop, perini and minime.
midgetcop- ouch ouch ouch about your back issues. i'm glad to hear that healed. also sorry to hear about your wrist in the car accident. i hope it is feeling better now.
perini- i'm trying to be patient!!! i'm generaly not a patient person, so this is really a test for me. i have been doing planks, but i should do more. you are right they do make the back feel better. i haven't done the brisk walking thing, becuse when my back hurts it usually hurts bad enough that walking fast is not quite possible. it's so weird how one day it will feel great and i can run then a few days later walking can be painful.

hey, minime! i TOTALY know what you mean, I was feeling the same way this weekend. i was watching my trainer work with another one of his clients and she just complained the entire time..."i don't want to do that, oh this is hard, how many more" it was ridiculous. i wanted to say to her, you are so lucky you CAN workout! Also, why pay someone to train you and then complain the whole time and say you don't want to do things? I felt bad for my trainer, he was trying to be supportive, yet push her as he should.
You are right, we should be happy that we can still exercise. funny you mentioned your biggest fear, as that is mine as well. I would be devistated if i couldn't work out, and on days when i've got low energy or don't feel like working out, i remind myself that i am lucky to even have the choice.
How is your knee feeling? wouldn't it be great if we could borrow body parts from those who don't use them? ha.
anyway, thanks to all of you for your support. sometimes just hearing that others have been through injuries and were able to recover and get back to training makes me feel better. (well it sucks you guys were injured but it's nice to know i'm not alone!)

Planks, eh? I'll have to pass that on to my wife, she has back issues. I had her doing get-ups a week or two ago, and her rolfer told her that was probably too intense for her.
