kate's journal

Hi everyone,
So i've just started strength training(starting with Ripptoes program), 3x/week, compound exercises. with crossfit/challenges I make up inbetween days. I'm currently trying to bulk and being new and finding out all the help my sister has gotten from an online journal I decided I would start one so anyone with advice could help me out along the way.

stats:
5'2"
118lbs
age:19
cals/day- roughly 2200, fluctuates as somedays I feel like a little machine and am just constantly hungry and get up to around 2600 once or twice a week, noting I also have a fairly quick metabolism.

current lifts:
squat-120 (constantly have been going up)
MP-60
deadlift-110
BP-65
Pendlay rows-75 (been stuck here for a while)

no heavy weights today so I did a crossfit, or attempted it.

WU-3x
dips-6
chin ups-5
pushups-15
back extension-15
sit ups-15

3x for time
-25lb dumbell snatch right arm (only did 25 cuz I was having a hard time getting the form right even though it looks easy)
-21 pull ups
-25lb dumbell left arm
-21 pull ups

Too bad I couldn't get a time though, the battery on my watch died partway through and I didn't notice til the end. The pull ups were hard, most ended up being jumping. I know with CF the point is to keep your HR up, but if I don't stop for a little bit during reps(like 20 sec) I can't finish it through, and since my HR returns to normal fairly quickly it makes it hard. I know it will come will practise, with being new to this type of workout, but as for right now, i'm not sure if I should just push myself and possibly not be able to do the full thing or take little breaks so I can finish it.

hey kate,

good work on the CF!! I could only do 20lb db and I was having problems with those too. It was a toughie!
In my opinion, I think it's better to take the time whenever you need it to rest, as you don't want to be hitting failure. As you get stronger/faster/more powerful etc, the time you take to rest should decrease and you'll recover faster too. So right now, I'd say work on just completing the workouts no matter how long it takes. I was definitely stopping to breath/recover in *many* of my sets today. I remember reading from another CF'er regarding rest time to "start 1 second before you feel ready".

Also just wanted to note that even though on your CF days you're not doing 'heavy weights' per se, you're still working your body extremely hard, so don't forget to take some rest days because working out is breaking your muscles down, rest is when they rebuild and get stronger.

Squats- warmup + 3x5x120 + 1x5x125
-3x5chin ups inbetween
BP-warmup + 3x5x70 + 1x5x75
3x25 leg lifts inbetween
DL-3x5x115
3x20 pushups

Today's workout felt quite a bit better, I had a bit more energy than i've been feeling lately.

are you two sisters?

good job on 'joshie'! I think it is great that you could use a 25# dumbell, that is pretty heavy for a one handed snatch!

I wanted to try this crossfit today but I forgot I had told a friend i'd do a spinning class with them(45min), so I was pretty tired but still did it. then I layed in bed the rest of the day

WU- 3x
15 push ups
5 chin ups
15 sit ups
5 dips
15 back extensions

-spin class

"Nate"
twenty minutes of:
2 Muscle-ups- (2 pull ups, 2 dips- dont have nearly enough strength to dod a muscle up yet)
4 Handstand Push-ups (only slight incline-feet on a bench)
8 2-Pood Kettlebell swings (25lb db)
-did 13 rounds

I'm yet to do a spin class that I actually enjoy, lol. There's something wrong with the picture of biking up a gigantic hill when you're on a stationary bike, but the instructor was fun and I felt great afterwards.
