Life's Journal

June 2003: Diagnosed with Type II Diabetes.
Weight: 236
Height: 5'4"

Diet and exercise dropped my sugar levels to higher than average levels in one week. End of week one: 226.

Week 2-5: On Avandia. Sugar dropped too low from diet and exercise that I was taken off medication.

Week 6-9: Normal sugar levels even after off medication. Weight: 201.8.

Will be recording weight every Tuesday for the next eight weeks to record progress.

I will be returning home to reunite with family and friends on October 26, 2003. Hoping to get into a 32" waist. Although that's wishful thinking.

Went from a 38" to a snug 34". Not bad for ten weeks. Will keep journal updated.

Hello Life,

I work for a company that designs and manufactures insulin pumps. So I am always curious about how others are handling the disease.

How old are you? There is a huge trend of Type II being diagnosed earlier and earlier than usual. What did you dramatically change, your diet, your exercise routine, both? Are you male or female?

Are you still losing weight? What are you doing in the gym?
Are you still off of medication?

I hope you don't mind all of these questions, but they help me understand the disease and how to manage it better.

Wishful thinking, perhaps, but not merely so. You have made great progress and there's no doubt that persistance can get you there. Keep it up!

You are right. The trend is huge. Count me into those statistics. I'm only 22 years old. Male. I probably was diabetic since 21. I had an eating disorder. For eight years I binged on an almost daily basis. Depression set right into that.

Things dramatically changed:

#1. Binging. I have not done it since diagnosis. I was always waiting for the day I would stop binging. Diabetes did it. It's very upsetting that it had to take a disease to stop it, but it's better than my continued eating disorder.

#2. Diet. No sugar. I refrain from having regular soda, ice cream, cake, etc. This was always a staple to my binging habits. I eat healthy, but occasionally go out for a burger and fries. I have been able to maintain regular levels when I eat just about anything. I am very thankful.

#3. Exercise. This I never did. All I do now on a daily basis is walk for an hour. It's wonderful. I never knew how much this had an impact in my life. Occasionally I try to jog as well. So I mix a little bit of both in.

I was diagnosed on June 18th. After doing research I was taken away by the dramatic effects diabetes does. I began to change my life. The binging stopped. In a week's time I went from 236lbs to 226lbs. I had blood sugar fluctuations. First at 351... then the next day would be 175... then the next would be 153... in a week's time it was stabilizing around 125-150. Still not good enough.

After 1 week I was put on medication. I began taking two 4MG Avandia pills. I continued my diet and exercise. In two week's time I went from two 4MG to 1 4MG. The sugar was dropping too low. The next two weeks I still continued diet and exercise. Even 1 pill was lowering it too much. I was advised to go off of it.

For the past 3-4 weeks I have been off medication. I eat just about anything I really want, but avoid sugar. And I eat small meals every couple hours while not overdoing what I eat. Every single day I check my fasting blood sugar in the morning it is between 85-95. I have not seen it go past 100 since early July. I am very happy, because I believe I have progressed wonderfully.

I feel a whole lot better, I am a lot more confident in myself, with a better self-esteem than ever before.

Upon diagnosis I weighed 236lbs. I now weigh 201.8lbs in about ten weeks. I'll check to see where I'm at tomorrow. (I check every Tues.)

I've read the more weight I lose the better my sugar levels will maintain. I am hoping for around 140-145lbs. I'm only 5'4". I'm a short guy.

That is about a 90lb goal and I have already lost about 35lbs. I would like to begin lifting weights but I am really more focused on the cardiovascular aspect. I am away from home right now at school so it is quite difficult for me to find a place to lift since I'm a broke college student.

Anyway, I used to fit into a really tight 38" waist. Borderline 40". Now it's a snug 34. I can't wait until I come home to see my family and friends, they will be thrilled. My mom worries a lot because of the disease, but I told her I'm doing fine and the numbers are normal.

I will keep progress on this as the days go by. Heck, I might find a pic or two to post of myself to show progress.

Thanks for the information. I am sure that your school has a gym. See if you can go into the football players wieght room for an hour. Without doing weight training you will end up with flabby or lose skin that may never go away.

As for your diet, it is wonderful that you've quit binging. But there are some other foods that can raise you blood sugar easily. How about posting a meal plan. With that some constructive suggestions can be made.

It's really hard to keep track of what I eat when school is in. Things often become too hectic and it makes it hard for me to always eat the right things, but here it goes:

7:45AM: Wake up - Test sugar. 83. Good.
8AM: Bagel w/butter
1PM: Out to Panda Express! Fried rice, orange chicken, bbq pork. Small diet coke. (Yes, it was good, and yes, this was in between classes. Needed to eat something!)
5PM: Atkins bar. Some kind of sucralose bar with 2 net grams of carbs.
7:30PM Out for a walk/jog
8:40PM Check sugar. 80. Great.
8:45 (now) Cup of soup. Chicken and stars!

I need a better eating plan. When I'm not at school it is a bit easier, but it's hard for me to make things, especially since I'm away from home and access to a stove is almost always near impossible.

The microwave's real handy, but I'll need to get a better grip on things.

Gotta finish my soup! Laters..

I can see that you are not eating very many calories. It would be extremely beneficial if you would eat more frequently. The bagel is not your best choice. You are much better off with some eggs or oatmeal.
