Maryland's Strongest Man 2005
I did the "mid-atlantic strongman" show yesturday and placed 3rd out of 7 guys, this was the hardest and heaviest contests for the lightweights, no sloutches there, I had to work hard for that 3rd place.
I won two awards, a battle axe for my 3rd placing, and a sword for the most "heart" award, because I've kept coming back and am know hanging with the top guys in Maryland.
I weighed in at 187.5lbs only one guy weighed as much as me and most of the guys weighed in the night before and were over 200lbs in the contest.
210lb axle clean and press for reps NO CONTINENTAL CLEANS ALLOWED I managed 1-full squatclean and 1- push press I just could not get a 2nd squatclean, 4th place.
250lb an arm farmers and 700lb yoke for 20yards each, the farmers was easy, I only got the yoke 3/4 of the way, 3rd place
atlas stones first stone 255lbs easy, second stone 270lbs got it, I couldn't lap the 315lb stone, I should start doing SLDL's now and I now have a 329lb stone to work with, 4th place in stones.
tire flip, I did 10 flips with that 680lb tire, but only got 9.5 flips in the time limit, 3rd place.
conan's wheel, 480lbs loaded but it felt like 700lbs with the steel bar and all, I got 1-1/4 rotations, 4th place.
carry and drag, 245lb sandbag, and 500lb chain drag, 20yards ea. I blasted through this, 3rd place.
this was an awsome day, my conditioning is on top, I recovered fast inbetween events and today I'm only a little sore in my upperback, traps and legs, my sun burn hurts more, I'm turning in my entry for "marylands Strongest Man" august 6th ASAP.
I ate breakfast at 7:00am and didn't eat again until 6:00pm no food inbetween events.
I'm ready for some insane training for the next few months, nothing but madness, I'm loving this ****.

Way to go dude sounds fun.
315 pounds is pretty heavy for a stone haha. You'll get it and you're pretty light so congrats.
I wish i could do some strongman stuff... i found a tractor tire at a car dealership that they were willing to give away and my dad wouldn't let me keep it. It was 500 pounds and now some other lucky kid got it .
10 flips with the 680 is damn impressive too.
Good job man.

thanks everyone, much apperciated!!!
Dan's wife took pics, I'll see if I can get'um posted.
I'm feelin good today, I'm thinking about my training for the next few months, it will consist of practicing the " quick lifts" on my 2" axle and reg. barbell, front squats.
as far as deadlifts, I'll still do these, but maybe focus more on SLDL's, I ripped that 500lb farmers off the ground, but had a terrible time with the 315lb stone witch I felt a weakness in my hamstrings, or more "sumo" stlye since the stones are so wide, this could have been the problem, yeah sumo stlye just might fix that.
more conditioning, I coulda pushed a tad harder on that tire and still had my wind, I expect 11-12 flips in august. I'll flip that tire with a sled harnessed to me.
I'll hit some cleans and stuff today (light day) and train heavier thursday, and do some heavy events sat., the "battle wounds" I have is a slightly fat swelled-up bruised "pinky" finger that got smashed in the chain drag, and a slight bruise in my pec from smashing my chest on that tire, my biceps are bruised from stones.

Yeah you're strongman training is a lot more intense than what a lot of other people do. And some of it is just crazy. You're tossing around so much weight like it's nothing!

tuesday 5/10/05
front squats, worked up to 255lbs for a single, PR, (had more in me).
2"axle hangcleans above the knees, worked up to 141lbs, 4-singles, collars were tight, no rotation.
2"axle deadlifts double overhand grip, worked up to 269.5lbs 2-singles, PR, I went for a 3rd but my grip was done.
messed around with some "sumo" stlye deadlifting (never done this before)
320lbs semi wide stance, 1-single
320lbs wide stance, 1-single
I'm starting off light on the sumos, I can feel this in my hamstrings (the weakness), I know for sure I can deadlift more conventional stlye.
The sumos might do some good, I may do sumos, then go heavier on the conventional, since I'm only training singles and 1-3sets, I can get the best out of both worlds, I'll see if I can end up deadlifting more weight sumo stlye.

Driven, I live in baltimore county.
Greg, the 2"axle is just a 2"thickbar, it's called the axle because the great Appollon (louis Uni) built a thickbar and put railroad wheels on the ends, it was called "Appollon's Axle", it weighed well over 300-350lbs and it was a challenge bar in the 1800's, I don't know if Appollon ever lifted them overhead, but until these freaks of today, only two men ever lifted them overhead in 100years, then Mark Henry lifted them 3 times, then all hell broke loose.
In my contest we use truck tires, and weights, so you can add whatever weight you want, 2"bars are wayyyy harder then regular dia. barbells.
