Greg,
I have to ask, do you do MP sitting down or standing up?
If you do them standing up, how're you able to get the heavy weight up?
That's one of the things I had trouble doing... which is why I've been doing them seated with the rack right above me...
Any ideas?

I do them standing in the squat rack. I set the pins slightly lower than my shoulders, set my hands, then use my legs to pick it up so it's about where it should be at the bottom of the press, then go from there.

Well, aside from going off the pins, you can also clean them at the beginning of your set.

Standing MP? I've never heard of that one before - is it safe? is it harder to do them that way? - tell all please benefit/risk - you know what we want to know.

Really? I thought the standing military press was much more popular than the seated. It's just my personal preference to do it standing. On both standing and seated you have to keep your back straight. I have a hard time doing that sitting. I've heard it's more difficult to keep straight standing, but I disagree.
If I'm not mistaken the standing MP is also called the Overhead Press?

Only negatives I can think of would be you have to keep your back stable without the same support you get from the back of the MP bench.

Now THAT one I've heard of - just different names, same lift - OK. I've never done that one - seated for me. Just one of those things - taught that way at the start - still do it like that. I guess whichever works for you is the one to do.

I've done both seated and standing, and the only problem I have with seated is the rack is further back than the seat... so when I do these presses I have to tilt my head back which is difficult to do because the seat is straight 90 degrees and high... it seems as if these machines were meant to be done behind the neck... but as I've learned early in the game... no behind the neck presses
I'll try to give the standing one another shot next shoulder day in the squat rack...

Have you tried adjusting the seat Jerome? You should be able to get it back pretty far. If you prefer seated and still have trouble unracking, just grab a spotter to help you with lift offs.

That's the thing, the seat can't be adjusted at all... I do have a spotter to help with lift offs but the hard part about doing 'em is the way the seat is 90 degrees with a high back...
I've seen other people use other squat racks (i don't know what they're called) that don't use the freeweights (i think they're smiths) and you can just throw a bench on there and adjust the seat back however you want but i really like doing freeweights as opposed to those...

LEGS/ABS, Thursday, March 10, 2005
Squats 6 x 45 lbs, 6 x 95 lbs, 6 x 135 lbs, 6 x 185 lbs, 6 x 185 lbs, 6 x 185 lbs
Calf Raises 8 x 225 lbs, 8 x 275 lbs, 8 x 275 lbs, 8 x 275 lbs
SLDLs 6 x 135 lbs, 6 x 225 lbs, 6 x 235 lbs, 6 x 245 lbs
Abs
Notes: Worked on squat form, keeping upright and pushing from heels. Some reps were definitely paused, but I tried to keep my back out as much as possible. Dropped weight in calf raises to be 100% sure I am getting full ROM. They were easy. SLDLs are starting to get more difficult, might stay here another week. Then did 15 minutes of crunches and random ab stuff.
