Is that 5 sets 5 reps? How does that compare to 3 sets 8 reps for building endurance?

I haven't done 5 sets for anything in awhile, I'm not sure how that'd work out for me. I think I could use some higher reps as I've been working heavy lately. Who knows lol I get so confused...

Your possible choices of workout are making my head spin
But I'm in the same boat. I finally found the first thing in training that doesn't really work for me, my 3-day split. I liked my 4-day much better (felt like I was working harder) and I'm going back to that, but I'm not sure how I'm grouping muscles or exercises yet. Good luck figuring yours out.

Amanda...it is 5 sets of 5 reps. You can go heavier than with a 3x8, but they are similar in workload (25 v. 24 reps).
mav...haha me too! I'll straighten things out soon I hope. I might expand to a 4 day split. My abs and grip need extra work. Good luck getting your workout fixed up too man.

My abs are OK, but my grip is in dire need of help. I use a mixed grip for my deadlifts and I still have to place it down for a second once I get about 3 to 4 reps in using 295.

I need to work my abs good and hard and heavy. I never have energy after deadlifting or squatting, so a full abs day will be a nice change. My mixed grip for deadlifts is fine up until about 325-335 for reps, then it's nice to have straps (esp. with sweaty hands and no chalk!).

BACK/BICEPS, Monday, April 25, 2005
Deadlifts Off 2 35s 8 x 135 lbs, 5 x 225 lbs, 3 x 275 lbs, 1 x 315 lbs, 5 x 320 lbs, 5 x 320 lbs
Chin Ups BW x 4, BW+20 x 6, BW+20 x 5
DB Hammer Curls 10 x 35 lbs, 10 x 35 lbs
Notes: After hitting 375 on conventional DLs last week, the 320s felt pretty light, but with the extra added ROM it felt great. I made one rep increase on chin ups. They seem to be very hard to gain reps on. Should I drop down to 10-15 and go for higher reps (8-12) or up the weight to 25-30 and go for less (3)? Used hammer curls to finish my forearms and biceps.

I actually read through all 75 pages of this. Awesome work. I just started my journal recently, but maybe you could give me some feedback from time to time. I think we're about the same age too. I'm 18, I'll be going to SUNY Brockport in the fall... Peace

I'm with ya there man. I really need some chalk, I'm usually stuck with straps by my third set. I just never get around to ordering the stuff lol (in fact I think I'll do that right now since I got nothing else to do.) If anything is holding my grip back right now its my friggin' sweaty palms.

Think about it. Adding more weight leads to higher maximal strength which leads to an increase in strength endurance. On the other side of the coin, doing lots of reps with bodyweight will also lead to an increase in strength endurance. Pick your poison.

Cort...yeah I just use straps when I have to cuz neither of the gyms I go to allow chalk. I just do extra forearm work (or at least I try to lol) to make up for it.
Andrew...I guess we'll have to see what I feel like in a couple weeks. I was talking with Firehawk and I might get rid of chin ups altogether and do lat pull downs. I got a lot to figure out on all my workouts..bleh.

Mix up the chins -- weighted 3-4-5 range one week, body weight to failure the next.
Pulldowns are OK, but they're frickin' easy compared to chins and pullups. Always opt for the open chain exercise when you can.
