BACK, Monday, August 8, 2005
Rack Pulls 10 x 45 lbs, 5 x 135 lbs, 1 x 225 lbs, 1 x 275 lbs, 1 x 315 lbs, 1 x 365 lbs, 1 x 415 lbs
Chin Ups BW+20 x 5, BW+30 x 3
V-Bar Pulldowns 5 x 160 lbs, 5 x 180 lbs
BB Curls 1 x 45, 55, 65, 75, 85, 95 lbs
Notes: I'm not gonna do any leg work whatsoever that involves my hamstring until my return after my wisdom teeth come out. That's about 1.5 weeks off, it was hurting after rack pulls. I gotta give it some more time to heal. Ugh.

Finally - now this is a good decision. Look forward to your STRONG return to leg work when you have time to heal.

Were those singles for the barbell curls? Nice pulldowns by the way. If you don't mind me asking, how much do you weigh now?

Yeah the BB curls was just one big set of singles, adding 10 lbs til I couldn't do another rep. I don't really care about bicep work, it's just extra so I play around with it.
And no, you can't ask about my weight. Just kidding. I'm at about 198, I've been 195-197 since May so I think I'm doing alright. Strength has been going up for sure.

It doesn't seem like strength gains ever plateau with you recently!
I was asking about your weight cause those are some serious pulldowns, but I saw you were chinning +20 for just 5 reps. I figured you must have packed on some quality mass if that was the case.

It's quite simple - you don't do them enough. With your accomplishments in other lifts, there no reason why you can't bang out a baker's dozen with a little training. Even at a bodyweight of 195 lbs.

I could probably do about 10-11 reps of bodyweight chin ups, but my weighted chin ups just are extremely tough to bump up. I've been working with about +20 at 5-6 reps for a very long time. I know my weight has gone up and I don't usually do them, but I'd at least like to be able to do a couple reps with a 35 or 45 by now.

After nearly two years, the man shows a weakness. It gets old watching you pile up the weight on every lift imaginable.
You know I'm messing with you...pierini is right. If you do chinups for a few weeks solid, the numbers will fly up.

Well, technically, if you have been at +20 for 5-6 reps for a while AND you've been gaining weight, then your chins are getting better

Yeah it gets kinda old checking on your journal and seeing your numbers going up nearly every time! Jeez, your a machine! When are you gonna show some sign of slowing?! You gotta give us normal folk a chance to catch up!

Thanks fellas. My squats, deadlifts, and SLDLs haven't improved in weeks thanks to my hammy. Does that count as no progress? I'm taking a bit of time off from those lifts to let it heal. Maybe for chin ups I should drop back to bodyweight, hit 2x10, then slowly work my way up weighted. What do you chin up gurus think?

I don't know if it will help you add weight to your chins or not, but I read on the AST site that doing 50 BW pullups is good for lat development - and not so hard on the shoulders as pulling with a load of added weight. Since I was pulling BW+what for me was a pretty heavy weight chained around my waist and my shoulder joints were starting to hurt from it, I gave it a shot.
Doing 50 is pretty hard - doing all one can do to failure, resting then repeating - by then end, the sets are down to 3 or 4 reps. It does seem to be working some though.
I was standing out on the deck in my swimsuit looking at the damage from a pretty heavy storm and had my hands on my hips. My little one (biggest supporter) was in the pool looking up to see what I was doing and said, "daddy, you could about fly with those things." My oldest daughter was like, "yeah, little hummingbird wings - go do some more pullups." Coming from a 16 year old smart alec - I think that was a compliment.
Give it a try - you might be pleased with the results.
