Newbie's gym log

Alright.. first journal I've done on the first time I've been inside a gym since I injured my sternum. Lots of firsts today.. first time I tried BB squats/deadlifts/Bent over rows.. Overall went pretty well though.. Mostly sore in my arms and in my legs.. guess I could use a little more work in the abs. Mostly today was me working on my form and getting back into lifting so my numbers are way down there. HEh not making excuses but I didn't know if too much weight would aggravate my sternum
Ht. 6' 01'' 21-year-old male.
WT. 190
Exercise I'm doing is from Men's Health homegrown muscle phase 1 plan..
9 exercises split up into three triads.. you do one triad.. 3 exercises all in a row without rest.. then do another set and move onto the next triad.
Triad A 2 sets
BB Bench press 10X125
BB Dead lift 10X125
Lat Pulldown 10X120
Triad B 2 sets
BB Squat 10X120
BB Bent over row 10X80
DB Lunge 10X60
Triad C 2 sets
Cuban Press
DB Calf Raises 10X60
Crunches 10

Have a question for you guys.. would it be better to do traditional set/rep routines or try out this triad thing? Seems like going through the different phases of the exercises they tend to stick with either triads/quads/supersets. Hadn't heard of anything other than supersets so I wasn't sure which was best. Any suggestions you guys could make would be appreciated.

hey, newbie!

welcome to df. i think you will find keeping a journal very helpful and motivating.

if you don't mind me asking, what did you do to your sternum?

to try to answer your quesiton, peresonally i would try out the triad thing. i've never done it, but it looks like a good workout.

Ahh thanks gymgirl... Yeah it seems to be helpful.. heh I always lose the charts that I right down on so this is a nice permanent copy of my progress. My sternum is a 6 month old injury that won't seem to go away.. I was training for firefighting at my campus' gym and doing skullcrushers.. Was up to about 120 pounds and after I had completed my last set my hands were a bit sweaty. Needless to say.. bar slipped and bounched off my sternum and since then I have twinges of pain doing the smallest of movements.. Hopefully it goes away over time but I'm not all that concerned about it.. heh as long as I don't pop a lung I'm happy. Alright thanks.. I'll definately stick to the triad thing and I appreciate the response.. Good luck to you in your workouts as well.

ouch. i was curious about the sternum becuse i have an old injury there too and still 12 years later there are things i cannot do. i did a release move on bars at gymnastics one day and peeled off landing on my upperback with my feet over my head. something got messed up in my sternum and for about 6 weeks i could not do any sit-up type movemnts. so lying on my back in bed i could not just lift my body up. i had to turn on my side and shift off. i have no idea what i did, and to this day i cannot do dips, and if i sleep wrong i will feel those twangs of pain you described.

did you ever go to the doctor? are there any exercises you have found you cannot do?

anyway best of luck, i look forward to following your journal.
