needs to be informed

116 lbs... plays soccer. For the past 3 months he has been going to workout at the local gym. He is trying to build muscle... I do see a difference in him already. At first , I was leery about being so young going to the gym but talking to my doctor and others , they all tell me how great it is for him to have such an interest at this age. Now he is asking me if he can start taking protein powder/shakes...I don't know much about this, and clearly not a fan and have told him this; I think he should eat well and not put something artificial in his body at this age. I think... ok. let him do this, he gets the muscle he wants... then he will turn to something else. Perhaps someone out there can enlighten me and help me out to understand the pros and cons and what I can do to help my son out . ( and to stop the arguments between us. lol )

How old's your son? You say he's very young, but that definition varies from person to person. Height might be good to know as well.

As far as protein powders/shakes, there's not much to worry about. The main ingredient is usually whey protein with some sugar thrown in. It's high protein with some carbs, and since it's in a liquid form, it lets you pack in more calories more easily to ensure you have adequate fuel. The protein it contains is usually a lot cheaper per gram than whole food. Think of it as drinking lightly sugared eggs, but tasting a lot better. If he's having trouble putting on mass, it's a valid option. Personally, I've never used protein powder, and I'd opt for milk.

Personally, I favor whole food over powders, just because food has more nutrients.

That being said there's nothing harmful in protein powder. It's not necessarily a gateway to more harmful things.

But you're them mom, so it's your call.

14 is a great age to start training for muscle growth as the hormones are in place.
I do agree with wholesome foods to build muscle but if you want good gains, shakes are a good easy harmless way of putting in the nutrition to fuel the fire.
Worry not about yr sons age, an acorn can become an oaktree, My lads train for muscle and boxing and stuff everything down their necks that aint alive lol. including raw eggs and milk shakes

Out of curiosity, why do you view supplements as "artificial?" In a perfect world, if we "only" got "all" of our nutrients exclusively through food, we'd have to eat pounds and pounds of food every day of a very wide variety and wouldn't have time for much else. Do you view the protein from eating a steak as better/healthier than an isolate complete protein that's just that, without added hormones or saturated fats?

That's a genuine question, and granted a tad extreme in example comparison, but,...even many of the healthiest individuals take at least a multi-vitamin to cover their bases. In your opinion, is that unhealthy or questionable as well? What is your view?

Mardon - here's a thought if you are still coming around...

Protein powder is simply what's left after all the sugar, saturated fat, and cholesterol are removed from milk. It's not a bad thing and will in no way harm your son.

However, if you are concerned, and as a parent you should be concerned about what your children put into their bodies. Have him drink milk. Real, whole milk. Don't be afraid of the saturated fat in it...it's actually good for him, probably better than the carbohydrates in it.

Milk has the perfect 4:1 carb to protein ratio for optimal protein absorption. The fat in it is healthy for him and will boost his testosterone production. Combine that with his age and it's AAS right from his own body...

Start with three square meals a day. His plate should contain:
Animal protein - complex carbohydrate - a green or garden type veggie in about equal amounts.

Between meals have him drink 2 cups of milk. Whole food meals are 6 hours apart, milk at three hours between meals.

This should make him grow acceptably. If not, then start adding more milk, one cup at a time, until he's consuming one gallon a day.

Some damn fine bodies were built in years past before all the scientific supplements on three squares and gallons of whole milk.

That being said, I absolutely agree that eating balanced meals with whole foods, (and I do eat meat but know some fine bodies built on variations of vegitarian diets), and the basic good ole fashioned fresh air, sunshine, exercise and curbing "junk" food works just fine. It's especially helpful if you can get your teenager to follow a well balanced meal plan in combination with proper exercise. More power to you.
