One thing we all tend to forget. When we "burn" fat, we are actually utilizing it for fuel. So yes, you can lose fat and add muscle. Your fat is 9 calories of energy per gram. This can fuel your workouts and your energy needs. That is why the body stores fat - energy to use later. So use it. Just don't forget that once it is gone and you don't take in enough calories, your body will then start using it's muscle for fuel - you certainly don't want that.

so if i get to my desired muscle mass in say a year, and i keep the wieght there, I should be fine with keeping the reps and weight, and just adding more cardio?

If this is true, why don't I just do lots of cardio and muscle building at the same time? (alternate days of course)

I know ill inevitably lose some muscle but not that much right? Also, with the accelerated metabolism from building the muscle (that diet i mean) wouldn't I be losing fat without cutting calories?

I agree with you Jock, i haven't lost any fat i dont think from my previous 10-12% bodyfat 72kg frame and now im at 92kg with 10-12%,

what i think i would do if i was just starting out is as hard as it may seem, just lift weights but like more in the sense of cutting up getting your bodyfat to like 8% (disregarding any muscle gains) and then once you're at the 8% or so lift heavy weights to gain muslce mass while maintaining your current bodyfat level.

What may work for one person may not work for another person. some of us are hard gainers and others gain weight just on smelling carbs. What is best for you can be found only through experience and experimentation, dietwise and workout-wise. My personal experience and the experience of certain friends suggest that cycling works best for hardgainers as they can very easily loose all the accumulated fat during cutting but need all that extra calories during bulking, and for people who gain fat easily it is best to follow a controlled approach as they may not be able to afford a bulking cycle without getting unreasonably fat and also they may not be able to loose all the fat during the cutting cycle without extreme dieting which may also lead to muscle loss. However whats best for u only you can find. Also there is no clear demarcation between the two approaches as one may follow a bulking-cutting cycle where the bulking cycle is more closely monitored to gain minimal fat but i guess it also prevents you from gaining maximum lean mass.

this might be a bit off topic, but here goes: i just read the entire tread and i am more confused then before, my head is spinning! here is what i got so far:

- some people think you need to bulk and cut while others think you can do something
else and still "look good"
- if you are an newbie - just do something and it will all work out - just be active!
- pay great attention to the diet
- stick to the "rules"
- do whatever works for you

One of the things that keeps us motivated and on the path to whatever it is that we aim to achieve is the ability to see the cause - effect sequence. i have been working out on and off for the last 10 years. i know that if i start pumping iron i will get big. and if i start eating more i will get fat and if i stop i will lose all of that. none of those effects is what i am trying to achieve! What i DONT KNOW is how to combine all of that in the most efficient way to achieve my one specific STEADY STATE goal: having around 10%bf and just look lean and normal (not skinny, not ripped) - like all the people with good metabolism who don't need to do a THING to maintain their shape. i am totally fine with working hard for it.

Could some kind soul coherently point me in the right direction, please. i am in my early 30s, 5.8, 165lbs, 20%bf. i would like to keep whatever little lean mass i have and maybe get a bit more muscles, but loose all that fat! and not just lose it - i would like to keep it off. shoud i do it in stages? should i do it at the same time? - i do not care as long as it works (sooner rather then later what does work?

if you've started cursor's diet and workout programs, then stick with them for six weeks and see how they work for you.

if you find you're not making any progress with the weights, then you'll need to increase the calories a tad - just add more protein.

Thanks threenorns, that is my current plan. i think it might take me longer then 6 weeks thou - mostly because of the diet - i used to never eat at home, and i mean never. so i spent two hours cooking Cusor's chickn pitas today (yammy! thanks, Cursor!), can't take 2 hours for lunch every day thou. need some getting used to it...lol

you'll know within three or four weeks, but six weeks is the general length of time to give a change in routine time to kick in. sometimes you won't see anything for four weeks, then kaboom!

but don't change everything - after six weeks, increase your protein a bit (add 25grams) and wait six weeks. then change your routine a little, wait six weeks, etc. if you go changing a bunch of stuff, you won't know where the problem was.
